Finding good kicks of this sort is almost impossible. DJ In Tha House has
some good drums. (its a web site)

Spectrasonics' Stylus has 1000 kicks. Although there are many in the more
'acoustic' variety, you can find a lot of useful, electronic kicks as well.
Your best bet might be to use distortion, compression and EQ on them to
make them more Euro-sounding. I'm sure that most artists f*ck up their
sampled kicks to give them personality and bite.

I've gotten most of my (often excellent) house kicks via the sites that are
listed on my free sample download page
http://musicbootcamp.com/audio_sample_library.shtml

Granted, you will have to spend considerable time downloading and sorting,
but a strong effort will yield excellent results. I agree with you. Good,
heavy, pounding kick drums are among the rarest on the planet. Even vendors
who say they've got good kicks often fall far short of what is required on
today's premier dance floors. If you find any other resources, please let me
know. Thanks. -Jer

Don't forget to use the old "sidechain compression with the kik and bass trick" to really tighten and fatten up your kik sound in the mix. I think this will help you achieve what you are looking for as much as the quality of the actual kik sample itself.

Oh yeah, that old trick...er...just exactly how does that one work again?
Are you compressing the bass, with the kick as the sidechain input? Maybe
you'd be willing to offer us a little bit of a "for dummies" description of
that? Thank you! Darcy

".txt" files on the AkaiPro download site

2002-12-17 by Soul [ C M ]

Hello...

Has anyone figured out how to successfully open, and then READ, the
.TXT files on the AkaiPro download site???

ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp/downloads/sound_libraries/S5000-S6000/

Please let me know how I can read them, they are all gibberish...

I have a PC and a Mac and have tried note pad, text edit, and Word to
no avail, all gibberish...

Thanks in advance!

Could you spell out "Ye Olde Sidechain Compression" technique for some of

i second that moticon ;)

i'm from "ye olde schoole" where young boys with unruly hair and
sleep deficiency usually perform such arcane tasks, a few hints
would be very useful.

Hi Guys,

Yes, the basic principle is that you insert a compressor on your bass track. And then use the kik signal as the sidechain input to that compressor. So the kik ends up triggering compression on the bass every time it hits. It creats a little bit of an "sonic pocket" for the kik to sit in. It really tightens up the whole bass/kik aspect of the mix.

Here is a quote from the prolific f-erenc szabo from a LUG post a while back describing this:

> You have bass guitar going through a compressor's

If any of you are interested, I used this technique on one of the mixes on my band's demo. You can hear it at the site in my signature below. navigate to the mp3 download page and check out "I Will Love Again".

Hmmm, I thought I had heard of this trick almost in reverse, so you
insert a gate on the bass track, triggered by the kick, so the bass
is only allowed in when the kick hits. Is this another standard method,
with a different sound, or would the gate method muddy things up?

My method involves a compressor, not a gate. You insert a compressor on the bass track and have the kik as a sidechain to trigger it. So when the kik hits, the bass gets ducked in volume (not muted out by a gate)

This is a different technique that is sometimes used to clean up a bass
"track". The compression technique is a great trick to use when you have a
great bass line and sound but it covers up the bass drum too much. By
sidechaining the compression it lets the attack of the bass drum cut through
just enough without taking anything away from the bass, or actually very
little from the bass. With the sidechaining gate trick you might want to do
this when you have a bass part that is supposed to be unison with the bass
drum but is a little off. Example: If the bass player is a little early on a
lot of beats you can use this gate trick to sync the parts together. Or if
the bass track is too busy you can try to tame it with the gate trick making
it simple with the bass drum. I don't think the gate trick will muddy
anything up. It will "clean" the bass part not neccessarily the bass sound.

Ah... Makes sense, I'll have to try the compressor technique then...

Interesting... and thanks. Can you give me a rough idea of the compressor
settings that I should be shooting for. I use compression to toughen up
sounds most of the time, so I'm wondering what to set the compressor to in
order to make the bass take a back seat to the kick. This is very
interesting to me and could help in a lot of situations. I want to get it
right. Thanks. -Jer

Hi Jer,

As usual, set the threshold and ratio to taste. The attack time should be set to a very low (quick) setting. Although due to the low end nature of the program content in this sort of patch, it isn't really a critical element to the overall effect we are trying to achieve.

The release parameter is the more critical of the two in this sort of a setup. It obviously depends on the program content, but I would definitely at least start out with a fairly quick release time. So that the bass can "get back up" fairly quickly. If, OTOH, you have a busy kik drum part, you might want the release time a bit slower.
