Best Audio Card

Best Audio Card

2001-03-14 by Mark_L_Holloway@hotmail.com

I bought the EXS24 Sampler a few months ago and still haven't used it
in production yet. I need a good audio card for my PC. I am running
Windows ME, P3/650, 512MB Ram. I use a Mackie 32:8 Bus analog mixer,
so the Hammerfall isn't an option unless I get Alesis AI3 converters
and that is more than I wanted to spend for now. How about MOTU
2408? Looking at the overall DAW solution, the MOTU 2408 seems like
a good place to start. Does this work well? If not, any suggestions
for a good ASIO2 card with 8 or more analog outputs? Also, I had
been using a Yamaha A3000, will the EXS24 really live up to its
expectations? I'm hoping so as I am betting my future on it! :-/

Mark

Hey Mark,

I don't know what the best card would be for you, but DO NOT buy a MOTU
product. Their support for PC users is terrible. If you buy a MOTU product
for the PC, expect incompatabilities, poor custumer support, and eventually
to lose your investment as a new version of Windows comes along and they
decide not to provide upgraded drivers.

I hear complaints on the Mac side as well. I know a guy who's trying to sell
his motu for $850 so he can go for the hammerfall... Jer

I have a G3 PowerBook and am considering the new PCMCIA Hammerfall card,
which uses the same driver as the PCI card. I'd like to know more about the
AI3 ADAT to Analog converter. Can you give me a Web link so I can look into
this as well? Thanks in advance.

Thank yo for the heads up. That's too bad that they don't support the
Windows community so well, as that's such a huge market. Not to mention, 8
analog i/o and 3 ADAT i/o is killer! I've heard good things about the Echo
products, and the Echo Layla-24 (8 analog i/o, SPDIF i/o, 16/24 bit support)
works well under Windows 98 and ME including the ASIO2 drivers (and Win
2000, but I don't use that now since Logic doesn't work).. I like the
concept of MOTU Audio Wire and having up to 3 devices, of which there are a
lot of options to choose from. I almost thought about getting a Mac G4, but
I have been a Windows user for years and know the OS in and out. Plus, it's
easy to build/upgrade intel machines and usually is not that expensive. My
only problem is I have one machine that is PIII/650 using ASUS VIA
motherboard, and an AMD Athlon 1Ghz using ASUS A7V motherboard with VIA
chipset. I have all the latest patches and bios for these motherboards, but
some have said the VIA stinks. Others said the VIA is good now, but it did
suck when it first came out. My AMD 1Ghz has Ultra ATA-100 hard drive
controllers and I have a 20GB 7200 RPM for the system, and a 30GB 7200 RPM
for audio/storage. I'd hate to get the wrong audio card and find out the
manufacturer isn't supporting Windows too well.. Anyway, thank you so much
for the heads up!

Regards,
Mark

I have a Mackie Analog 32:8 mixer. I could buy the Hammerfall but I would
also need an Alesis AI3 ADAT -> ANALOG converter. I want the 8 analog
outputs so I can assign my drum parts and ES1 synth to various outputs. I
use a Transient Designer for compression off the Mackie for amazing kicks
and snares. I will be buying a card with ADAT anyway just so I can have the
abilit to import from my Fostex 1624 or someone elses ADAT if they need to
dump it.

Firewire is a different matter altogether. This device (theoretically) has
many advantages, and I've heard a lot about it (so far so good). Keep tabs
on this product. I am not saying that the brand MOTU 2408 sucks by any
means. I just don't suggest it over other solutions. I'm sure the 2408 is as
good as my VXPocket. Watch the reviews of the Firewire device for a solid
response, but definitely don't generalize MOTU on a criticism of one device
for ASIO. I may still test out the MOTU Firewire device before springing for
the Hammerfall-laptop solution. -Jer

Re: [exs] Re: Best Audio Card

2001-03-15 by Toranaga

Hi,
I\ufffdm very interested (and sad) to hear about the MOTU issues, because I was
strongly considering their new Firewire interface for my laptop.
I saw most of the upcoming new solutions for laptops at Musikmesse, the MOTU
as well as the Hammerfall PCMCIA looked both very promising (not taking in
account any experiences with drivers, support and general experience with
the companies). The big advantage of the Hammerfall PCMCIA is of course the
different breakout-boxes they will offer - for different connection needs,
and apparently the PCMCIA-version uses the same tested driver the "regular"
Hammerfall uses...
For Audio cards n general (not laptop): I\ufffdm personally very satisfied with
my Midiman/M-Audio Delta1010 - although there apparently are some issues
with driver updates not taking in account the wishes of the users and
general support, the quality of the Delta series is excellent.
For info about the Alesis AI-3 look here:
http://www.alesis.com/products/ai3/index.html
The price for one unit (in Germany) is about 1300,-- - 1400,-- DEM.

I would be interested in more opinions / infos about the MOTU Firewire,
Hammerfall PCMCIA, Emagic EMI 2|6 and other possibly good solutions for
laptop...

Regards, Tora

My guess is that because G4 Macs and Powerbooks come with Firewire, MOTU has
the intention of making Mac a higher priority than Intel. Currently, most
Intel machines do not come with Firewire, but it is an add-on card you buy
for the PCI bus. Some manufacturers (Sony, Toshiba) do include Firewire in
their laptops and desktops.

I know I've been touting the Hammerfall, but I second this response since
Emagic works extremely hard to reduce latency and maximize compatibility
with Logic. Thanks for the tip!

I would go for the emagic emi 2|6; i played with it at the

Where the hell is 4.7

2001-03-19 by Lee Jones

Hiya gang
Does any of you have an idea when 4.7 will appear. I am getting a little bit
impatient now. Not pretty I know but I could really use all the new features
as I use it every day.
Peace
