This article is a bit lightweight, but it'll help (scroll down to the
middle of the page):

I'll look for more later,

Thanks for the pointers! So, you must like EXS if you say you're
a junkie...! :-) What OS are you running on?

I'm starting to think that I'm going to have more than one soft
sampler because I'm cross-platform. EXS on OS X, Halion or Kontakt
on Winders. We'll see... Sigh...

Yes, I love my EXS (although I could use break-point enveloppes and better
editing/programming). I'm on OS 9.2.2, but I've also successfully used it
in Jaguar (OS X 10.2).

I don't know how old you are, but I remember spending 1500 dollars on a
sampler, so just go ahead and buy two soft samplers!

Break-point envelopes? I'm not sure what you mean by that... And
better editing/programming, huh? Is that something that the other
guys have or are they all pretty equal? I've used Cool Edit Pro
to muck around, but of course, it doesn't work on the Mac...

Heehee! I just turned 44... One of the reasons I started using
the Peavey SP was that it was under $1000! Too bad Peavey never
really followed it up. I heard that there was supposed to be a
Peavey SP Plus or something, but I've never seen one. Heck, I
still even have SampleVision version 2 on diskettes!

Yeah, it's only money, but yesterday was tax day, eh? ;-) On top
of the sampler though, there's the issue of sample libraries, unless
I can convert what I've already done...

Atmosphere is starting to look pretty nice too, and it comes with
a pretty extensive sample library. But if I understand correctly,
you can't add your own samples...

Depending on what you need to accomplish, you could always sample and
assemble your banks on your OS X box in EXS24. Then, if you needed to
play those samples on the PC, you could buy the EXSP24. The EXSP24 only
PLAYS samples back. But it's a VSTi, so it should be compatible with
just about everything you'd want to use it in on the PC.

The only problem is that with Logic 5.5 eMagic wrote some new features
into the EXS24 and called it the EXS24 mkII. I'm not sure sure if the
EXSP24 was ever updated to support the new features of the EXS24 mkII.
If it wasn't, you'd have to give up some functionality of the EXS24 mkII
and save files in an EXS24 mkI format.

Yeah, I don't know either. Sounds cool though! I'm curious...

No, just about everybody in the world is better at editing
samples/patches than EXS24. It's the one MAJOR flaw of this
application. Those of us who have been using Logic for a while don't
mind so much, because we're just used to Logic's old-school sample
editor (which is the same the EXS24 uses), but editing zones/groups in a
complicated patch is a nightmare.

It's not like it's unintuitive or anything. It's just a lot of
busy-work sliding the mouse selecting and changing things individually.
It's also pretty low-tech. The patch edit screen looks more like a
form than an interface. Still, once you've got a patch together, you
have this feeling that you know EVERYTHING that went into that patch. It
just feels more "solid" to me than with other systems. And tweaking
effects, modulating, and actually playing a patch once the zoning is
done is so much nicer with the EXS24 than with other samplers (IMHO)
that it all sort of balances out for me.

Also, it's not as though eMagic doesn't know that the editor sucks
(we've been telling them so for a year now :) ), so it's bound to be
improved upon some upgrade or another.

I feel the EXS24 is THE sampler to use if you're already using Logic.
If eMagic would fix up the sample editor, it'd be worth switching to
Logic just to use. :)

EXS24 imports Giga, SF2, and Akai stuff really well (note: there are
still issues reading Akai-format CDs in OS X). Also, keep in mind that
the Vienna Symphonic Library is being released in only two formats: Giga
and EXS24. I'd say the EXS24 sample format is going places!

Joshua,

Traditionally, synthesizers and samplers offer ADSR (and variations of)
enveloppes. This limits you to 4 settings to define how a given patch
evolves in terms of volume (amplitude), colour (filter), pitch (frequency),
etc. Breakpoint enveloppes can have anywhere from 8 to 16 to XXX
points/settings that you can change. This makes for a much more dynamic,
natural contour. You can find examples of this type of enveloppe in
softsamplers/synths like Kontakt, Absynth, Crystal, etc.

Here's an a pic of Kontakt. You can see a breakpoint enveloppe in the
middle of the image: http://www.kvr-vst.com/img/kontakt.gif

C'mon Emagic, give us a break!

Ned

PS: yeah, I know that was bad, but I couldn't help myself =:-p

And in hardware like the Microwave... :-)

Hmmm, so now you're making me lean towards Kontakt...

I know what you mean! ;-)

Kontakt looks really good, and the editing section looks sweet. I'm not
sure if the filters are as good as EXS, however. And it does have a few
bugs, as shown in Native Instruments' Kontakt forum. But then again, it's
still a young pup. I'd buy it, if I didn't have a couple of other goodies
to spend my loonies on (Vokator, EVD6, Mindfx, Reaktor 4 library, etc, etc
- yikes!!).
