Best soundcard for MAC G5?

Best soundcard for MAC G5?

2003-12-16 by Jean Luc De Lorme

Hello, Iam a newbie to the MAC world and to Logic. I was
wondering if anyone could steer my in the right direction for a good
soundcard to use with my MAC G5. I'm willing to spend about $500-$800
for a nice soundcard.

I was looking at the MOTU 828 series, but I've heard that it has
a lot of bugs in it. I want a good MDID interface along with SMTPE
and audio in and out. Any info is appreciated.

Hi,

I have heard such good things about the RME Multiface that I ordered one to
use with my Mac G5 (PCI interface) in the studio and also with PC laptops
for concerts (card-bus interface). Mine has not arrived yet, though. I'm not
quite sure it sends out analog smpte signal. In fact I have always used
special smpte generators for doing that - if I have to record a smpte stripe
to some media.

If you're seriously interested in an opinion on the RME box pleas get back
to me in a month or so. I should know by then ;-)

Thank you for the info, I'm checking out the RME site right now. It
looks pretty good so far! :)

If you want no latency : get a MOTU PCI 424/G5 system (see depending of the
number of ins/out what you need)
Buying a FW audio interface is not good for BIG projects especially if you
have a second FW device like a disk.
I own a Motu system with 54 ins and 12 outs made with (PCI 424/G5,
1296+2048MKII+24i)

[L-OT] A Song Made with Logic

hello all,

i won't disguise this as anything other than a plug...but you can hear a new
song i made by clicking the link below. it was made entirely with Logic and
it's included synths (except for the drums, sequenced in Logic but triggered
with Ritmo AU).

Nice!
Put a smile on my face at least..;-)
I can imagine this being used as a soundtrack in an absurd
violent/comic movie, like 'kill bill' or the likes.
ok ok, every reaction should have a point of critique to, I know...
Well, maybe the tempo-slow down in the middle could have been dressed
up a bit, musically. But then again, maybe not!

Cheers!

Re: Do you have an iPod or have you considered buying one?

2003-12-22 by Mark

The problem is that this kid used his iPod every day for hours and
Lord only knows how many times he re-charged it. The average user
might get 3 - 4 (or more) years of life from an iPod (more than most
people get from their Walkman, Discman, or their outdated Rio mp3
player they bought several years ago) so in my opinion he does not
represent the general population.

Yeah, it sucks to know the battery will crap out. But Apple will
fix it for free if it happens in a year or you can buy an extended
warranty. Honestly though, I think after a few years most people
will buy a new one, like getting a new cell phone. Their becoming
commodity (cell phones AND mp3 players).

The point of the article in the link was that Apple originally did not
offer replacement batteries. The guy at the centre of the story was amazed
and disgusted that they just wanted him to junk the unit and buy another.
He and his brother then applied a little pressure through the multimedia
dramatisation they created and, lo and behold, Apple came up with a change
in policy. NOW they do offer a battery replacement scheme.

There is a class action law suit against Apple, and apple is offering to
replace ipod batteries for $99. I read somewhere that said after a year and half
the batteries go bad. I paid $499 for my 30g and its not going in the trash any
time soon. My battery acts a little strange at times, but it seems to be ok
despite being 1.5 years old. Its the main place for me to listen to music -
while biking or walking.

I wouldn't own one if you gave it too me, but apparently the iPods'
batteries have ALL been going dead shortly after 18 months. Someone in NYC
discovered this and after going a round or two with Apple Tech Support and
being told he should just resolve to buy a new one, this guy started making
posters and plastering them all around the city, stating simply that the
un-replaceable batteries go dead after 18 months and Apple won't fix it.
Then, lawsuits against Apple were rumored, upon which Apple was rumored to
have started a replacement program. BUT, if you're willing to pay $99 to
keep your music fresh every 18 months, remember you still have to have it
backed up elsewhere, because when the battery dies, the music goes too, and
must be reloaded *if* you get a new battery. Hardly worth the time or the
investment(s), IMO. d:p~~~

I'd just like to point out that Apple now offers a $50 AppleCare plan
for the iPod that extends the warranty from 1 year to 3 years. Under
the extended warranty, depleted batteries are replaced for free.

Note, however, that depleted batteries are NOT replaced for free under
the original hardware warranty, just the extended AppleCare warranty,
which I was told last week by an Apple rep who conveniently called me
as my 1 year PowerBook warranty was expiring. (Gotta love the "Your
warrant is expiring, would you like to buy AppleCare now?" calls :)

Yeah, $50 is another $50, but for 3 years of no-worry about the
battery, at a cost of 5 CDs from the Music Store, I'll be buying it in
the next couple of weeks.

If you use the iPod with iTunes then all of your music exists both on
your hard drive with iTunes and on the iPod, so if you have to replace
the battery or fully-reset the iPod your music is still safe on your
hard-drive (unless you manage to have both your iPod and computer all
fail at the same time and lose all data).

Sorry. I have to amke a comment here. ALL? I think that you'll find that
statement to be completey untrue. Please don't post opinion or hearsay as
fact.

Are you sure about this? Does your PC's hard drive get wiped everytime you
switch it off? Sure, it makes sense to backup the iPods contents just as
you would any other device. That said - how do you get audio onto the iPod
in the first place? By synching it with your PC in most cases - so most
users may well already have their "backup".

This is nonsense. I know people who have been using the original
version since it came out. It totally depends on the usage.
Rechargeable batteries in anything give out eventually

The thing is he is full of shit on several points like for example
the "un-replaceable" one (look here: http://www.ipodbattery.com/ )
and it has been pointed out numerous times but I guess hysteria loves
company....

You can find batteries for 50 bucks if you look.

Honestly the hysteria about this is insane.

i had a first gen 10 gig'er that was perfect until i dropped it really
hard about a month ago, and then i got a completely new one on my
warranty. never had a battery problem with it at all.

Funny, i work and play in NYC almost every single day, up town,
midtown and downtown and i havent seen a single poster. he would have
to be REALLY mad to put them ALL around the city. im not sure if you
have ever been here but its kind of big.

I have to agree with that statement if all of what you say is true, and it
appears to be. However, it was a featured news item on several national
news broadcasts. Seems to me if there's nothing to it, Apple would have a
pretty good lawsuit against not only the NYC poster guy, but the networks
who didn't bother to check the facts, as well. However, I still have
absolutely no use for one, so give it to someone who wants it, Dennis. I'll
take the money it costs, though... ;)

Oh no! Do you mean to tell me that the networks actually broadcast a
news item that was erroneous or slanted or inflated purely for the
purpose of making it appear to be a story? I thought such things
could never happen!

>Seems to me if there's nothing to it, Apple would have a

This is where people go wrong. Thinking that apple would actually be
in any way interested in pursuing such a law suit. Whether the guy
has a point or the whole thing is completely fatuous (and IMHO it is
the latter) to pursue something like that legally would only give the
gadfly more opportunity to do them damage regardless of the outcome.
Even if a jury agreed with me that it was ridiculous and they settled
in favor of apple (which is in no way assure, remember this is a
country where you can sue a restaurant for giving you a cup of hot
coffee without checking first to see if you are so stupid you will
pour it into your own lap) any money from a settlement in apple's
favor would still not cover a fraction of their legal fees. And
coming down hard on the pest to make an example of him would not do
anything for their image. It is a lose lose situation for apple and
really the only option they have is the course they are taking and
that is to do what they can to mollify the joker and wait for it to
blow over.
