Board with RS232 and RS485

Board with RS232 and RS485

2004-06-15 by nonuckingfumber

I have used a 2106 based prototyping board to make an adapter that
allows an RS232 gateway onto a legacy RS485 network. The board I used
had 1 RS232 port and the RS485 is on the breadboarding area.

I am going to need small quantities of these and it is a toss up
between making a custom PCB or using prototyping boards and adding on
the extra circuits **unless** somebody knows of a ready made 2106
board with RS232 and RS485!

BTW, power consumption and size (within limits) is not an issue, and
it could also be a 2104.....memory is not a problem. Indeed the only
reason for switching to an ARM (from an 8051 derivative) was the
performance required.

How about a board with 2xRS232 and an off-board RS-232 - RS485 converter?

The Eval-Board I use for myself has an LPC2104/05/06, one full serial Port and
one serial port configurable as either RS232 with Rx/Tx or 2-Wire/4-Wire RS485.
If you want, you can get the Schematics and Gerber Files. The PCB was made at
olimex.com, components were hand soldered. Nothing great but it works and
probably would satisfy your needs.

Sounds ideal......but I cannot find any reference of it, or any
reference to RS485 on thier 210x based boards. Dou you have any
name/ref number for it?

It isn't actually one of Olimex's, Jens had it made for himself.

Nice little board thougth, pretty much the same as the Web7days board,
but Olimex's is probably better made. Mind you, it does cost $10 more
(what a scrooge I am!).

I think I will just solder an AD3485 and connector onto the breadboard
area of the web7days or Olimex board......they are both so cheap that
it is still cost effective.

The Olimex board is *much* better than the Web7days one. Worth paying the
extra.

Sorry, seems that I did not make myself clear. I used Olimex' PCB prototype
service to manufacture the PCB, PCB design and assembly I did myself. Just
thought that if you don't find a readymade board you could probably reuse my
board design.

First lot I just need 16 boards....Olimex have allready sent me a
discounted offer for that so I will probably use that and solder my
own buffers on the breadboard.

If all goes OK and we get further orders I suppose Olimex would be
happy to do me a better made version of my customised board ;-)

Thanks for the tip off!
