jtag choice

2005-08-16 by Ghislain

Hello

I will buy my first ARM board in the next week (I'm a newer in the ARM
World) and the main question I'm asking is: Which JTAG-USB must I buy
and What are the difference between them:

There are U-LINK from KEIL and J-LINK from IAR or simply a JTAG
through the parallel port?

I will work with LPC21XX and LPC22XX and and I've got the IDE from
Keil (use with GNU and keil compilator)

Thanks a lot for your help

Hi,

if you intend to continue using the Keil IDE, it makes sense to buy
U-Link because the IDE is fine tuned to work with U-Link.

I am new to ARM and LPC21XX also but for what it's worth, I can say
that the Keil ULINK is working very well for me with the Keil tools.
The download is quite fast over USB, debugging works well, etc.

How much did you pay for the tools?

I paid $199.00 from www.lpctools.com. The ULINK appears to support
several different types of JTAG connections for different processors
by simply changing the ribbon cable. The company shipped me one with
the wrong ribbon cable but corrected the problem and credited me a
portion for the trouble. I hated the lost day waiting to get the
cable but I felt they really treated me fairly. I would do business
with them again for sure.

Note, if you by a Keil MCB2130 eval board and the ULINK at the same
time, you essentially get $50.00 off of the package.

I also ordered an Embest LPCEB2000-IW2 board with a 2132
daughterboard. This board is $168.00 and comes with a parallel port
JTAG interface. This looks like a nice board but has no prototyping
area at all. I have not had time (and may not for a while) to even
power it up.

For now, the Keil MCB2130 and ULINK are working well for me.

Re: [lpc2000] Re: jtag choice

Okay here's where I'm getting lost wrt JTAG adapters. Actually I was
interested in J-LINK, but the one at LPCTOOLS says: JTAG debugger for
LPC2000 series. The problem is: I need to work with Cirrus Logic
(EP7312,EP9301,EP9315) and ST Micro (STR7), and I have some LPC parts
here also. IAR has an STR7 kickstart kit with J-LINK, so I know it
works for ST, but I see no mention of Cirrus Logic on their site.
Does anyone know if J-LINK will work for these 3 ARM types (Cirrus,
ST Micro, and Philips)? Did they give you info on how to change the
ribbon cable for different systems? I thought the ARM chips all used
the same JTAG pinout, is that not true?

Thanks,
Doug

Most yes. But some debuggers have some build in limitation because
they are reduced in price for marketing reasons.

So basically all ARM7TDMI based chips have the same JTAG.

Would that include ARM7TDMI cores with ARM720T extension (cache and MMU)?
And what about ARM920T? Do I need a different JTAG for this?

Thanks,
Doug

I have three different JTAG adapters: Nohau, JLink and ULink. They all
seem to have the same interface requirements. I have used these on LPC,
Sharp, Motorola/Freescale, and OKI. I have found no problems that are
related to JTAG interface. Most all the adapters refer you back to the
ARM interface site.

I use JLink for day-to-day stuff because it is integrated with IAR, my
tool chain.

Hi Mark,

The Segger J-Link works with CrossWorks for ARM - a smaller fortune
required.

I have the J-Link. But come to find out, it only
works with IAR so you are stuck with paying a fortune
for their compiler. As far as I can tell, you can't
use the GCC compiler. I image the ULINK is the same.
For these reasons, would the better choice be to go
with the generic LPT version?

Looking at the list of JTAG adapters here:
http://www.open-research.org.uk/ARMuC/index.cgi?action=browse&diff=1&id=JTAG_Interfaces&revision=7

It seems that chameleon pod is good: can behave as wiggler or raven
(but faster than wiggler), supports GNU GDB, affordable. What I don't
like is the parallel interface, most laptops don't have parallel ports
anymore. Seems amontec is working on a USB version of chameleon pod
but its not available yet and I'm sure it will cost a lot more.

It seems like these tools vendors want us to buy a starter kit with JTAG
for every variant of processor we work with. I find it very annoying to
see "JTAG for LPC2000" and such, these are all ARM cores.

I wish there was some schematics around for building a USB JTAG adapter
for ARM. I wonder: could a USB parallel port adapter be used with a
wiggler and still work with ocdremote?

I've got some of the new Microchip flash PICs with USB that I keep meaning
to play with, it should be quite easy with one of those. From a hardware
point of view, at any rate.

RE: [lpc2000] Re: jtag choice

2005-08-18 by Raymond Rogers

I have two JTAG adapters that I use with the ARM ADS and RVDS tools.
The first is a Lauterbach ICD, which I use for just about everything I
do, the performance is excellent, The user interface is not great but
usable, it is scriptable, and it even comes in Ethernet and USB
versions, but it is not cheap. And as far as I know it will support any
tool chain that produces an ELF/DWARF image. They can be found at
http://www.lauterbach.com.

The second adapter is an EPI Majic. They have never been able to make
it work with the Sharp ARM9 I'm using but it seems to work OK on the
LPC21xx parts that I've tried. Their tech support has been terrible and
I would not recommend them except as a last resort.

Looking at the list of JTAG adapters here:
http://www.open-research.org.uk/ARMuC/index.cgi?action=browse&diff=1&id=
JTAG_Interfaces&revision=7

It seems that chameleon pod is good: can behave as wiggler or raven (but
faster than wiggler), supports GNU GDB, affordable. What I don't like is
the parallel interface, most laptops don't have parallel ports anymore.
Seems amontec is working on a USB version of chameleon pod but its not
available yet and I'm sure it will cost a lot more.

RE: [lpc2000] Re: jtag choice

2005-08-18 by Dan Beadle

Segger ( the maker of JLink) offers an RDI driver - $400 or so + the
$300 for the JLINK (but buy a starter kit for $295 and it is bundled).
So you can use JLINK with ARM tools, or any RDI tool set.

I use their native driver for IAR - works well for me on ARM7 and ARM9
processors.

Hi Mark,

The Segger J-Link works with CrossWorks for ARM - a smaller fortune
required.

Both the yellow and black j-link devices branded IAR, the OEM is Segger.
This is no secret. One passes 5 volts from USB to the target, the other
does not. They work with any ARM7/9 including Thumb mode. IAR uses
Segger's software unmodified.

I was told Segger has no plans to develop a Linux driver.

http://www.keil.com/ulink/chips.asp shows the chips that the ULINK
supports. It may not be completely up to date. I would call Keil if
I had doubts. I'll take the cover off my ULINK and upload a picture
of the inside. I was impressed to see all the connectors for various
ribbon cables. It's also hard to believe, but Keil includes the GCC
compiler with their MCB2130 eval board. In the uVision IDE, you
choose via a radio button whether you want to use GCC or Keil's
compiler. There is a very readable .pdf book with appendices for
using GCC and Keil on the LPC2000's at
http://www.hitex.co.uk/arm/lpc2000book/index.html.

I created a photo album named "JTAG interfaces" and uploaded a
couple of pictures of the ULINK.

I just found a good site for the lpc2138 board with the LCD. And I'm
very surprised to see a price of only $149:

http://www.lpctools.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=66

But it costs $299 if you want to get it with the jlink flash
programming device. Maybe it's just me, but I'm guessing a cost of
$150 for jlink seems a bit high?

Can anyone tell me if the Olimex Arm JTAG device ($20) is a reasonable
replacement for the jlink device?

I attended a seminar and got both for $199

This appears to be the same thing sans LCD for $75
http://www.sparkfun.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=291615&cat=73&
See "Prototyping Board for LPC2138"

I don't see USB ARM JTAG adapters anywhere for less than $200.

Well I know it works with GNU tools and macraigor ocdremote, also with
rowley crossworks, not sure about IAR tools. However, just a short
while ago, someone here said JLink only works with IAR tools.

What I'm looking for is USB ARM JTAG that works with GNU tools
(ocdremote connected to GDB debugger).

These FTDI chips look interesting, aside from USB->UART operation, they
have a mult-protocol serial interface designed specifically for protocols
such as I2C, SPI, and JTAG.

And they have new DLL functions for JTAG:

My research on this says that j-link comes with the "j-link server"
software, which is very similar to OCDremote. It should support gdb.

I haven't found any drvier that supports a USB JTAG device on linux,
but USB support on linux has been pretty thin in general.

The IAR USB device is probably a re-branded version of j-link. I'm
guessing these probably have identical circuitry, given IAR's tendency
to outsource hardware development to other companies.

www.segger.com makes jlink
Have useful utilities for jlink
http://www.segger.com/jlink_mem.html

http://www.segger.com/jlink_overview.html
http://www.segger.com/jlink_iar.html

They even have a driver for vmware - maybe an option for linux support ?

It doesn't. I tried, it only works with "open source" solution from
gnuarm group and IAR at91sam7s64 board (J-link was part of the kit).
