Thanks for all the help so far, the unit is a HI-Fi separate tuner and has two green plastic sockets on the rear labelled as XS. The XS interface was to enable Kenwood hi-fi units to be controlled by a "master" unit as far as I can judge and used an 8 bit serial protocol with jus

Those cap values are awfully small. What value does the crystal spec say you should have for load capaacitance? Take that value, double it, and subtract about 5 pf. Use that value for both caps and try again. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
