Amps n' such...

Amps n' such...

2004-05-24 by supernovanexus

All I do is search and search on what to do about monitoring. I need
input on base amps versus keyboard amps. I need input on using an amp
versus using studio monitors. Also, I have been thinking about
putting together some type of speaker (build a case and use 6x8
midrange car speakers and 10"/12" component subwoofers). If anyone
has built a small system themselves, I could also use input on that.
Maybe a subwoofer and some sort of mid-range speaker. What do you
think is right?

P.S. Please reply with what monitoring system you use on your current
set-up and how it has worked for you thus far...it would be very
helpful.

During an earlier discussion on this subject, I was one of the few
people who advocated using a bass amp. I think it was a 300 watt
Mcgregor amp with a 2x15 cab. It was a monster, when you start going
round the kit and giving it a bit of stick (and pedal), you could
feel the room shake. However after reading a few reports from here,
I opted to change for the behringer kx1200. The first thing I
noticed was the cymbals came to life, the difference in sound
quality was amazing. There are also four seperate inputs, so anyone
can just turn up with their guitar, plug in and off you go.
As if all that wasnt good enough, I managed to pick up the kx1200
for 210 gbp delivered, and sold the old one for 250.
One word of warning though, after searching for reviews of the
kx1200 I did find quite a few who complained about build quality and
even the terrible state they arrived in due to poor packaging.
I can only say that the one I have arrived in pristine condition
and sounds excellent.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Yes, I have seen that one. The one I am keeping an eye on is the
Kustom KMA100X. Has anyone had any experience with this amp?
-Features:
100W RMS
15" Celestion speaker
4" x 10" piezo horn
3 channels, one with an XLR mic input and phantom power
4-band active EQ
8 digital effects
Effects loop
Footswitch jack
Extension speaker jack
-Specifications:
28"W x 23"H x 16"D
30 lbs.

Has anyone had experience with using powered studio monitors? Has
anyone had experience with the Yamaha Personal Monitoring systems? I
just think the market has a worse than horrible selection of products
on the market. Roland has some very awesome ones, but the prices are
twice that of other competitors, its rediculous. Proper amping is the
worst part of e-drumming. I mean, I love my kit but this darn
speaker/amp thing is killing me.

-Zack-

P.S. I have read other topics, but I just can't seem to find an
answer. I did have my eye on the Behringer one, but I have heard
nothing but bad reviews...only one good one so far.

One more quick thing. What about the 50 watt sub and 20 watt
sattelite speakers on the yamaha monitoring system. Are the 20w
sattelite speakers worth it at all...seems a tad bit underpowered to
me for $300. The next one up is just too high for me.

Re: Amps n' such...

2004-05-25 by supernovanexus

Ok, what I meant by base amp above are the bass amps with the piezo
tweeter built in. That's the kind of base amp I'm asking about. Seems
like it would go to about the same highs as a keyboard amp would, but
lower lows, if you know what I mean. Is this true and can this type
of Bass amp (12"/15" woofer, 1" tweeter) work and be up to the
challenge of an e-drum kit? In a sense of playing along at home or
playing at a small gig, i.e. coffee shops, country clubs, small
rooms, etc.

-Zack-

P.S. Sorry for the 3 in a row posts, maybe I should think about
eberything I need to say the first time around lol. =P

Zack,

Dan, aka Cheakster, bought Yamaha's 50 watt version to use with his
new DTXtreme kit, but returned it in favor of the larger one. I
haven't heard from him for a week or so, but he promised a review of
both on this board. He's an edrum novice, but his observations will
be helpful if he can get them together for us. It seems to me,
without having a shred of experience with either Yamaha monitor, that
if the lesser of the two isn't satisfactory, then the other one won't
be either. But that's just a guess--based on the naked specs--and
it's by no means a certainty that if Dan didn't like his, you, or
anyone else, would agree.

By the way, Behringer traditionally has had a bad reputation for
quality control and patent infringement (two traits that may explain
its low prices). I've heard the suggestion that quality control has
improved, though many people still complain of products that don't
work out of the box or break down shortly thereafter. It still seems
to be hit or miss with that company. Those who weather the storm, or
don't face it at all, often seem to like the sound of the Behringer
amps. A second-hand keyboard amp from a reputable company is a safer
bet than a mongrel system that no one can safely recommend. Another
possible problem is that someone may get a amplification that seems
okay to his ears, only to find out later, in comparison with
something else, that the frequency response isn't so good. If you
can, try different things, and if you can't, buy something that
experienced e-drummers who know what's at stake tend to like.

Zack,

Some bass amps do deliver more frequencies than others, but the mere
presence of a tweeter in a bass amp does not guarantee that it will
do a proper job with cymbals and even mid-range transients. The only
way that you'll find out is to connect it to your kit and listen.
Then connect a good keyboard amp to it for comparison. Also, amps
with similar specs can have much different sonic signatures. Buying
an amp without knowing such things may be relatively easy, but not
necessarily satisfying in the long run. Once you know how these
things can vary, and you get a sense of what you like, the whole
process becomes more economical--at least in terms of time and
energy, if not in terms of cash outlay. It took me years in audio to
figure out what kind of electronics and speakers I prefer. Until
then, I liked everything. I still like a lot, but my ears have their
preferences.

I have only heard the 50W version but the satellites are just
aweful! Maybe my sound engineer's ears are more sensitive to this
the a drummer that may be use to bashing cymbals 3' from his ears all
day but they are just plain HARSH! (I almost typed that in all CAPS
for enphasis but that would have been too obvoxious, though that
would have been the point ;) I hadn't heard them turned them up
really at all, since I'm such a poor player I usually try to play
with headphones or very softly at the store (the clacks on the pads
are enough for most to hear how bad I must be playing ;) But the
other day some other guy was bashing on them and he was trying to
play double bass so had the HH's open and they were just peircing...
I thought man those HH's are brutal! Then he started in on the
cymbals, I walked out the room and thought well maybe it's just those
speakers! I also don't like the idea of the satellites being
so "directional", for a lack of a better word. As you say you want
to play in cafe's and such I would think if you were using them for
the "audience" to hear then you would not be hearing them very
well... I guess you could sit them behind you are do like RATM's
drummer at Lalapoloza 92'?(sp) and turn backwards and put up truck
mirrors to see behind you.

I myself am torn between getting some nice studio monitors (I could
use them for the "real" function anyway) or the keyboard amp... I
like the keyboard amp vs. monitors for the extra inputs it provides
and ease of use to add vocals or even bass (all kept at low
volumes... that is the point of E-Drums right?)

If you can't get your module with you to the store maybe see if they
have a decent drum machine and hook it up to a few options and see
how they sound. You will at least understand why some options won't
work as well as others.

Good luck and what do peeps think about studio monitors... like
Behringer Truth's (minus the reputation, I know 3 owners that love
them) or Even't 20/20 (self powered) I know those are much better and
not in the same price class but I might be able to snatch some up for
a decent deal (a trade! for some junk!)

Zack, Ed said it all correctly. I have very "mild" needs in the
way of amplification- just personal drumming downstairs- no gigs,
etc. The MS50DR couldn't even perform to THAT level! It's not just
the lack of volume (which I expected from 50 watts), but a pure lack
of quality sound replication. I know headphones can't be beat, but
this monitor wasn't even close! The drums were fuzzy and totally
lacked any punch. Sound control was very minimal, and impossible to
tweak with any success. I couldn't return it quickly enough-sad to
say. All ears are different, but this gets a big thumbs down from me.

Hi! Ed
I sent you a P.M. asking where to post the reviews on this forum( at
least I attempted to). Sorry if it didn't get to you. I didn't see
a "review" section.
Thanks

Re: Amps n' such...

Gilligan,

I am also undecided between a keyboard amp and studio monitors. I
like the keyboard amp in the since of the onboard EQ and the inputs,
including the mic input. I like studio monitors because they are
small and versitile, yet provide great power. An example is the
Behringer Truth monitors as they have over 100 watts powering LF and
HF drivers. The fact that there are two versus one, the sound can
reach greater volumes. Only problem with the small studio monitors is
I do not know how they are on low-end, as in the bass drum. Has
anyone seen/heard an edrum on studio monitors? Cause if they can
produce some sort of punchy low-end on the base drum, then I think I
will end up going with studio monitors over the keyboard amp. I am
still not sure at these stages and am lacking on time to go to the
music shop and "hunt" as you could call it. Maybe I can make it on
thursday, supposed to rain here so practice should be cancelled.
Anyways, g/l and let me know what you find out and vice versa.

I think I have decided on an amp to get: the Kustom KMA100X. It is
getting superb ratings and houses the gear I am looking for. I think
it'll be perfect. Now only to save a paycheck or 2 for it lol. Here's

Hi Dan,

How's the drumming? I didn't get a message, either at edrumming or at
my Yahoo account. Otherwise, I'd have been right on it. You can post
your reviews in the Files section on this site. When you do so, you
should check the box in the upload area to have a notice appear on
the board that they are there. We had plans to use DTXpressions to
host reviews, but haven't got it together yet. Anyway, I'm looking
forward to your comments. Also, even though I've read what you had to
say about the module elsewhere, if you feel inclined to talk about it
some more at this forum--either as a review or a message--as Ross
Perot said, we're all ears. Back almost a year ago when information
started to leak and rumors to circulate about the new DTXtreme, I was
poised to get it--even contacting Yamaha to try and sneak an early
one. As time, and NAMMs, passed, with no DTXTU in sight, my
attention wandered. But sooner or later, I'm going to get my hands on
one of them.

Re: Amps n' such...

2004-05-26 by Kevin Richard

It appears you have decided, I hope it works out... but for what it's
worth I had brought my DR5 "rythm machine" to my buddies with the
truth monitors and hooked them up real ghetto (headphone out straight
to the back of the monitors) I must say it was loud enough for
that... BUT I was looking at them for using with the drum machine NOT
a E-Drum kit! They definately had punch and the low end seemed to be
there and it was pretty loud and more importantly clear. BUT I wasn't
thinking E-drums and I can't recall what they would be like with the
E-drums... but you definately don't want to be transporting studio
monitors for a live gig! so if you need that I would go with
something that can get bumped around with out you biting your lip
everytime!

If you are starting to second guess yourself and have a couple of
weeks, when I get my kit in.. should be next week.. I will borrow
those monitors and jam through them and see.. I'll even hook up bass
and guitar through my 1202 to see how much they can take in
a "jamming" enviroment.

I'm trying to get specifically to DAZ or any one who uses the Behringer
KX1200 Keyboard monitor. I just purchased a KX1200 today, online, and
it will probably be here before the end of the week. My question is,
however, give me an idea of which channel you are connecting your
DTXPRESS III set to and what you're setting some of your settings on the
KX1200 for the best sound with your DTXPRESS III set, will you please?

Thanks,

Re: Amps n' such...

Hello Glen,
As regards the setting I use, I'm afraid it isnt as black and
white as you may think. With the set up I have at the moment I use
the mono output on the dtxpress brain, and put it straight into a
small mixing desk (Behringer eurorack UB802).This then goes out of
the desk to input one on the amp. The bass, low mid, high mid, and
high settings are all set the about the middle, and I use the
controls on the desk to alter the sound.
If you dont have any info on the Behringer kx1200, then you may
like to visit www.behringer.com , go to the section on instrument
amplification and then onto kx1200. There you will find you can
download the manual, which will give you more info on the controls.

Daz.

Re: Amps n' such...

2004-05-26 by supernovanexus

Awesome Gilligan. I won't be getting an amp/speaker system for about
6 weeks. I'd love for you to post results of your testing. My other
idea, because I know they can take the e-drum kit's frequencies, is
making a box of plywood and inserting in cut out holes a 15" sub-
woofer and 2 6x8 midrange car speakers. Thinking about 300 watts on
the sub and 250 on the midrange, each. Would somehow hook up a 400-
500 watt amp. This would take some more time but would ultimately be
portable and a cost much less than getting an amp or whatnot. The
power would be more than enough, but I don't know if I can spare
enough time.

I'm sorry to have to bug you about this again, however, one of the
reasons I bought the Behringer KX1200 was due to your message about it
on the group and what your comments were about it. You'll have to
excuse my ignorance about the DTXPRESS III and what it is that I need to
do to hook it up and make it sound good, but, I would really like to
know what it will take for me to connect it to the KX1200 and make it
work and sound good. If it means that I need to purchase a Eurorack
UB802, Eurorack UB1002, or Eurorack UB1202 that's fine. What I really
need to know, however, is why do you need to use the Eurorack UB802,
what purpose does it serve, and how and what does a person need to hook
it up so it will work and sound good in the KX1200? Would you please
excuse my ignorance in regards to this and take the time once more to
help me out with this subject?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration,

Glen

Hello Glen,
As regards the setting I use, I'm afraid it isnt as black and
white as you may think.

2004-05-26 by Kevin Richard

My concern with car audio is that it's no where near the level
of "pro" audio... it's designed to basically go into the confines of
a car where it is pretty tight where as this will have to carry the
sounds in a more open room... maybe I'm wrong but I'm trying to
remember demo'ing anything decent at like best buy or circuit city in
the car audio department... I don't thing the stuff is that
impressive, not for the money... to get true power you have to pay
for premium gear with car audio they dont' seem to have a very strict
rules to rating amps and such. Once you look at spending that kind
of money you might as well get some good pro gear designed for what
you are doing :(

I'll let you know how it goes though!

Re: Amps n' such...

2004-05-27 by reetaprice

No need to apologize Glen, after reading back through my message, I
seem to have glossed over a few things.
In the past there was a thread about the lack of output in the
headphone socket, and people either bought a small headphone amp, or
like me a powered mixing desk. This was in the days before I had any
amplification at all, and I had to use headphones all the time. So
it isnt vital to have a mixing desk. For me it is something I
already have, and is more convenient to have next to me and adjust
the sound that way. The reason I mentioned it was to explain why I
didnt have any amp settings to pass on to you.
All you need to hook up your dtxpress to an amp is a lead with a
standard jack plug on each end. One end goes into the back of the
dtx brain marked L/Mono. And the other into the back of the kx1200
using any one of the four inputs. If you have managed to download
the manual then you will be able to see the layout of the back for
the inputs, and the front for the input controls.
Now then, how to make it sound good. I am afraid I cant answer
that one for you, it will just be a case of playing around with the
settings on the front of the amp until you are happy. Probably a
good way to start is to have the four equalizer switches in the 12 O
clock position and make minor adjustments to suit your ear. The only
tip I would think to give you is, never have the volume on the dtx
brain (Module) turned up full. I find the cymbals distort a bit and
sound dreadful. I usually have it at about two thirds volume and
just turn the amp up an extra notch. Another possible aid for you to
consider is a stand for the amp. I used to be in a situation where
the amp was on the floor, and I didnt get the full benefit of the
sound. Then I used to put it on a chair at the other side of the
room, but found I couldnt adjust the volume or settings easily (
which is why I have the mixer just next to my kit). Having a stand
so the speakers are angled straight at you is a very simple way to
improve the sound.
I seem to have been rabbiting on for a bit now, so I will leave
you in peace for a while. I apologize if my previous answer was a
bit vague.

RE: [DTXpress] Re: Amps n' such...

2004-05-27 by Glen D. Earl

Thanks DAZ, that helped put my mind at ease quite a lot. I do
appreciate the time you have taken to help me understand what I'm about
to get and somewhat how to use it and make it work for my situation. I
only have one more question about it, at this time, and that is, does
having a Behringer Eurorack UB802 help with volume (as in giving it a
boost or energy) or does it just help in controlling the sound output of
the system? In other words, would you really highly recommend having
one in addition to the KX1200 or not? Or if it is a recommendation at
all, would you recommend having something else that might work even
better? Another thing, as far as volume, does the KX1200 have a pretty
good punch to it, or is it pretty lame? Thanks again for all of your
help and for now I'll try and leave you alone about it.

It's just nice to get input from someone who has the same type of
equipment I'm about to have which has the experience already and how to
use it, you know? Thanks!

Glen

Subject: [DTXpress] Re: Amps n' such...

I apologize if my previous answer was a
bit vague.

Hello Glen,
I wouldnt worry about the ub802, it isnt neccesary for you to have
one. As I said, it is just something I already had, and I only use
it for the convenience of having a few controls next to me. As
opposed to getting off my fat behind and walking a few feet to
change the volume on the amp.

Daz.
