Does anyone know the active ingredient in Windex? I realize that it is
cheap and easy to get hold of in the US but I am in the UK and must buy an
equivalent...

My 3000 is playing up and I think it is trapped air. The manual describes a
procedure for removing carts to enable printer transfer. The method seems
to result in the lines being purged. Is this right and might that be a
solution for trapped air?

Windex is dilute ammonium hydroxide (ammonia) and a
surfactant (like detergent)

I am a newbie, but from what I have read, I think the main purpose of the
Windex routine is to try and clear clogged printer nozzles. The solution
helps loosen the gummed up ink.

Simon:

Windex has several different formulations.

One common formulation contains 2-Butoxyethanol (CAS# 111-76-2 aka
butyl cellosolve, an oil/grease solvent), Ethylene glycol hexyl ether
(CAS# 112-25-4), and Isopropyl alcohol (CAS# 67-63-0)

another contains 2-Butoxyethanol (CAS# 111-76-2) and ammonium
hydroxide (CAS# 1336-21-6). ("Windex with Ammonia-D")

Windex won't remove air from your print heads.

90-95 (Deionized) Water

Are you going to make your own cleaning solution or try and find
an alternate?

The pre- transport purge will suck out virtually all the ink in
the system but you will lose a lot of ink when you reprime. If the
problem is air the best thing to do is just let the printer sit idle
and wait for the air to dissipate- usually 24 hours.

The active ingredient that helps out those who use windex in their
printers is water and ipa. The water is the key solvent and IPA
lowers the surface tension and allows the solution to flow and
penetrate the clogs. It's also pretty good at defoaming (the other
cosolvents lower surface tension and help break up greases). The
ammonia raises pH. Acid will precipitate pigments so a nuetral too
slightly basic pH is ideal for happy pigments.

Hope this helps a little more than my last post.

Salut Michel,

If going by your address you're from France, it's for cleaning glass,
made/marketed by Johnson here in Australia. It's blue in colouor, guess
that's to stop kids mistaking it for bright green and red cordial ;-)

The bottle I have here only lists it as being poisonous, it doens't give
the ingredients unfortunately.

A french name in direct translation might be fenetrex.

Anyway you should be able to pick up an equivalent, or possibly the same
as I think Johnson are pretty ubiquituous.

Hi Michel,
To elaborate on Jim's answer.
Windex is a brand of glass cleaner. It has ammonia in it which helps clean and sometimes unclog printer
heads. You should be able to use any brand of window or glass cleaner.

Windex is an ammonia based household cleaner.

http://www.mwords.co.uk/pages/printers/printersHowDoI.htm#WhichCleaner

I'd rather use MIS cleaning fluid. Put some on the parking pad of the
printer and it will be soaked up into the nozzle jets. Or it can be
injected directly into the pritner heads.

Thanks Jim but you know here in France we don't know this product so we may have it under some other name, for example if you tell me "bleach" I know what to look for but instead if you give me a brand name familiar to everyone in the US as bleach then I am lost.

Windex vs. Simple Green

2004-11-23 by Avery Minor

I have heard Simple Green mentioned but no details.
Do you dilute the Simple Green?
What amount of time does it take to soak in?
Do you use the same method as with Windex?
Thanks,
Avery

Thanks to all regarding Windex, we have this stuff of course, it is also blue in color and they elaborate the product, with or without alchool, anti-static.....etc.... they even put Bitrex inside to make it very bitter in case a kid wants to drink it. The problem might well be to find the less elaborated one.

Many thanks

Michel

I use it straight, same procedure as Windex.

Re: [Digital BW] Windex

Hello Michel,

There's an explanation for the seeming casualness of the replies.
Here in the US certain product names are ubiquitous to the point they
have become synonymous with the product itself. For example, if you
need to blow your nose you ask for a Kleenex, even though there are
other brands of tissue. And we ask for Jello, even though there are
other brands of gelatin desserts. Windex is the same, even though
there are many brands of window cleaner. If I go to the store and buy
some Publix window cleaner, I will still say Windex if someone asks me
what I'm using. So there you have the whole story <g>.

Regards,
Clayton

Simple Green may be sold in ready to use consumer spray bottles. If
so, it's probably already diluted. I buy mine by the gallon and dilute
it 1:4 to clean greasy auto parts, bearings, and bicycle chains.
Undiluted, it's damaging to some paint finishes.

I use Glassex, don't know whether that is a familiar brand in the
rest of Europe.
