Premium Matte paper

Premium Matte paper

2005-02-20 by Paul Roark

I uploaded a few curves for Premier Art's Premium Matte paper and UT2. The
paper prints rather well on the C86 with sliders at 0.

Premier Matte is the bargain acid free paper. Photo Warehouse has it priced
at $12.95 of 50 letter-size sheets. This is for the 210 gsm, 11.2 mil
version. See http://www.photowarehouse.biz/premier.html. There is also a
thinner version.

The paper has a dmax of 1.7. Among acid free papers, only Photo Rag can
match it. Not bad for a paper that is priced down at the EEM level. For
your snapshots that might end up in family albums, I think EEM ought to be
avoided.

Premier Matte is very bright white and prints cold. It reminds me of old
Brightcube Eclipse Satine, Moab Entrada BW, and Condor (all the same
coatings). By the way, Photo Warehouse also bought the old Eclipse
inventory from the Brightcube liquidation and has that paper at bargain
prices.

Premier Matte is coated on both sides. The convex side is a bit smoother.

The paper comes in all the usual sizes, including rolls.

Thanks for the link Paul. I was about to re-order EEM but will get the
Premium Matte instead.

Any chance for UT-FS curves for this paper ?

Epson UK/Europe 2100 Mac OS-X driver

2005-02-21 by Steve Kale

FYI, I (rather surprisingly) received a call from Epson today following up
on my conversation of a week or so ago with them re the OS-X 2100 driver.
They have agreed to escalate the issue "to the 3rd level support in France".
The issues I raised were the inaccurate centring of prints by the Standard
driver and, more importantly, the inability to print Black Only when the PK
cartridge is installed (it uses all the inks). I also raised the point that
many people are disappointed that the Epson R800 printer does not allow
Black Only printing. They also confirmed there is a known issue with the
Epson driver not working properly for custom paper sizes.

[Digital BW] QTR neutral curve PKN, UT7 Light warm/cool grey

2005-02-21 by Steve Kale

Carl/Roy

Perhaps I am doing something stupidly wrong here but, I am trying to
construct a curve using PKN (K-slot) and the two UT7 light inks - cool light
grey in the LM slot and warm light grey in the LC slot. I am trying to use
the UC_Neutraliser to mix the later two. I keep getting an error message
that the inks are not defined only once. I guess it is because I do not
have LK as a grey part - just K and LC - and hence it hasn't anything to
copy to LM and LC. I would have thought it would just copy the second gray
part to the remaining two. If I set LK as the second gray part (I have glop
in LK but don't want to use it in the mix) and still have LK=0 will that get
around things? (ie the curve is calculated based only on the gray val and
not the ink limit which I can leave set to 0).

Also I keep getting:

Yes, should work OK. Here is what I do to get a neutral curve. If you
don't want glop to follow the light inks then just edit the LK curve in
the .quad file to a straight line or whatever else you want.

# Uses the MIS UT7 inks in the following positions:
# K - MIS Eboni black
# LK - MIS Glop
# C - UT-PKN

BTW I am still not getting great dMax from QTR (vs the Epson driver). After
drying, pre a glop overcoat, with 90% ink limits and boost at 95 I get L
readings at 100 of 8.0 for warm and 6.3 for cool on Ilford Smooth Pearl
(ordered dither, matt paper setting). The Epson driver produced much lower
figures. They are also a lot lower than your numbers. Sometimes I wonder
if I have a different set of code!

Finally got the friggin' thing. Yellow can't be an unused ink when
UC_Neutraliser=YES.

Carl

FYI 45 light cool and 45 light warm is still very warm. Do you look at the
combo when determining the mix? Roy sent me an ink separation chart that
also prints the combo (ie K, C, M, Y, LC, LM, LK and then the UC Neutraliser
LC/LM/LK/Y combo). If PKN is neutral you will likely be introducing a lot
of warmth into the highlights....

Which paper Steve? I'm using that profile with both Kirkland glossy
and ilford smooth pearl and get neutral prints on both with UT7 LC and
UT7 LM at 45 each - no warm highlights. Here are some LAB data for the
Kirkland:

25% 68.70	0.36	-2.55
50% 44.83	1.04	-2.18

Ilford Smooth Pearl. I haven't linearized yet. I was simply looking at the
calib page which shows the LC/LM/LK/Y inks combined as a single "ink". With
45/45 the combined ink 100 patch reads 39.8 2.1 1.2 (50 was 60.2 1.1 0.9).
A 40 warm/50 cool combo gives 41.1 1.9 -0.1 at 100 and 61.0 0.8 -0.1 at 50.
In the end I ran 36/56 without reprinting the calib. Once I have done the
glop overcoat and linearized I will post the finals.

Steve,

I printed your calib page with the profile I posted (on both Ilford
Smooth Pearl and Kirkland Glossy) and here are the comparable data to
what you just posted:

Kirkland Glossy:
LM/LC at 45/45 LK 10 (glop)
50% patch L 61.0, a 0.7, b -2.0
100% patch L 43.3, a 1.3, b -1.9

Ilford Smooth Pearl:
LM/LC at 45/45 LK 10 (glop)
50% patch L 61.9, a 0.9, b -1.9
100% patch L 44.3, a 1.4, b -2.0

Quite different from your results - are you using the UT7 LM and LC
gray ink? Note that I did not edit the LK curve in the cal .quad file
so glop (LK) was applied in the combo print (LK/LM/LC).

I swear I must just have different ink or something. My Gray Value for
45/45 was 40 when I think yours is down at 20. I am really beginning to
wonder if MIS have any QC or perhaps we are just doing something completely
differently. I print the calib page with the ink limits set and then
measure the 100 patch on the combo and find the interpolated "% black".

Re: [Digital BW] QTR neutral curve PKN, UT7 Light warm/cool grey

2005-02-21 by Steve Kale

Here is the measurement data for the linearization function of my "neutral"
ISP curve. You can see even with 36/54 I had trouble cooling the midtones.
If I went further I think the highlights would have gone too cold. Rightly
or wrongly I am focusing on the Lab a values (as I think that is what Paul
focuses on when mixing his inks).

Steve,

The GRAY_VAL I used for ink 2 (LK-glop) in the neutral profile was
measured using the LC gray (I didn't have the combo cal file then). I
just re-measured using the combo (LC+LM+LK 45/45/10) and also got
around 20 for a partition value, comparing the 100% combo L to the
values in the C (PKN) strip. If you are getting partition values up in
the 40's I wonder if you are using the dark UT7 gray inks instead of
the light grays.

Re: [Digital BW] QTR neutral curve PKN, UT7 Light warm/cool grey

2005-02-21 by Steve Kale

Well according to the labels on the bottles I have the right inks but yes I
really wonder if I got a wrong batch. Here the partition values I have:

Warm 44
Sepia 40
Neutral 34
Cool 24

One (big) qualification: I am using UT2 LM medium grey as my "light warm
grey" in the LC slot. My understanding is that this is the same as UT7 LC
ink. I am also using UT2 sepia toner which I understand to be the same as
UT7 sepia toner.

On this basis my inks set up should be the same as yours but with the inks
in a different order:

K is PKN
LK is glop
C is MIS PK
LC is UT2/7 light warm grey
M is Eboni
LM is UT2/7 light cool grey
Y is UT2/7 sepia toner

Looking at an old calib page from the UT2/FSN days I can clearly see that
the light warm ink I am using is lighter than the "dark warm grey". I have
not opened the bottle of UT7 M.

I'm baffled. Your cool partition value is close to mine (20.4), but
the warm, sepia, and neutral are all quite a bit higher.

I must have a bad batch. MIS really needs to put up swatches or something
so that you can confirm you have the right thing. And I really don't want
to have to calibrate each time I buy a bottle of new ink!

Yes but to be honest they are really useless. How about a step wedge with
measured Lab data typed next to it. A swab depends too much on how the
cotton bud deposits the ink. Reading the swabs with DigitalColor Meter, I
get L readings of circa 28-30 for UT2 LM and circa 8-8.5 for UT2 M. Reading
my own swabs I get L readings of around 28 for my UT2 LM and about 26 for my
UT2 M (which I am not using). I am fast coming to the conclusion that
someone whom MIS respects a great deal, eg Paul, needs to give them a real
slap re quality control. I will take a look at my UT7 cool inks as well....

My UT7 M is circa 29, while the UT7 LM is circa 36.

I read their swabs at 2 and 28-29 respectively.

Dumb question alert....cant remember how to change a cart on my 1280 before it's empty. I just got my glop UT2 carts, and want to pop them in right now.....there are two buttons I think.....the utility does not have an option for this....hmmmmm......
Thanks in advance, DM

Don't even need to turn printer on. While facing the printer rotate the white geared wheel
top towards you until white nub holding the head goes down. Move head by hand to the
left and install new cart. Then move by hand back and rotate wheel oppisite to lock head.
Turn printer on.

Hold in the paper feed button for four seconds - that's British time you
know and not American, which tends to be different.

Re: [Digital BW] Changing carts question...

2005-02-22 by Douglas Meeuwsen

Nope.....I knew it was more complicated than that.....now I just get a
constant red light over the middle button. That is probably telling me
that the cart is out of ink, even though it new. There should have been
a way tell the printer what I was doing. I wonder what to do now. Power
cycling does nothing. I remember itr being a two button operation. Cant
find my book. The utility says nothing, and those silly little pictures
do not mention replacement of a cartridge before the empty light comes
on......frustrating.
someone must know how to do this. I will try the method described by
the other fellow who said to do it while the machine is off. ....Thanks
for any help...Dm

[Digital BW] Australian paper prices

2005-02-22 by Steve Kale

Can someone provide me with the prices of a couple of papers in Australia:
Ilford Smooth Pearl and Epson Premium Semigloss - each in A3+ size. In the
UK the ISP comes in a box of 25 sheets and the EPSG comes in an envelope of
20 sheets.

Thanks

Steve

Re: [Digital BW] Changing carts question...

The method of turning it off and sliding the carriage over did not work
either. Weirdly, pushing the button under the red light, made it blink,
and the carriage slide over. I then put my old half gone cart in and
the light is out. Does that mean that the chip in the new cart is bad?
I'll try putting it back in.....DM

Re: [Digital BW] Australian paper prices

Steve,

The best price I've seen for a pack of 25 A3+ Ilford Smooth Pearl is $67.70
AUD Including GST. I don't know about the Epson paper as we don't use it.

Re: [Digital BW] Changing carts question.....

2005-02-22 by Douglas Meeuwsen

Ok.....no matter how I do it, the red light stays on. When I replace my
half full cart, the light is off, when I put in the new cart, the light
is on. Does that mean I have a bad cart? MIS is closed. I just called
them. I have one more cart of ut2/glop here, and could pop it in if i
knew what the procedure is. I found my book, and no mention is made of
replacing a cart that is not recognized as empty. On my 1200, you could
not do this without going thru a cryptic procedure involving holding
down multiple buttons etc.

That is a correct indication of an empty cartridge

I then put my old half gone cart in and

If the light goes out it means the cartridge is recognised as full or at the
very least has some ink in it.

The cart was bad....the MIS trouble shooting online said to try putting
a shim on the left or right, and if that did not work the chip was bad.
I put in the second cart it it is fine. I just hope I can get the glop
combo to work before it's empty!

Thanks. That's about 20% more expensive than here. If I move I think I
will stock up before I come down.
