Photokit sharpener and B&W

Photokit sharpener and B&W

2005-03-09 by aaashapiro

Photokit sharpener works only on RGB images. So what is the best way
to apply it for black and white images?

One could scan in greyscale, then change mode to RGB, apply capture
sharpening and then do all adjustments and finally output sharpening
and then, before printing, convert back to greyscale.

Or, one could scan in RGB, capture sharpen, convert to black and
white through desaturation or channel mixer but keep in RGB until
all adjustments are made, then output sharpen, convert to greyscale
and print.

With digital camera capture one could follow the latter procedure
after converting the raw file in rgb, or one could desaturate
(presuming Adobe Capture Raw)prior to converting and then capture
sharpen etc. with, again, the last step before printing being the
conversion to greyscale.

What workflows do people use? Have I omitted some possibilities?

Re: Photokit sharpener and B&W

I have PhotoKit Sharpener and use it fairly frequently for my color
images. I often use unsharp mask in Photoshop, since I get to see
the results while I work, instead of waiting for PhotoKit to finish
its new layer.

I usually prefer to save sharpening as my final step in the editing
process. Since PKS only works on RGB images this is a bit of a
problem. I don't really like converting back and forth between modes
if I can avoid it.

I do my B&W sharpening in Photoshop by creating a sharpening layer
(Alt-Shft_Cntrl-N, followed by Alt-Shft_Cntrl-E). Then I use unsharp
mask and add a layer mask, painting where I want to add or remove
sharpness. I can also adjust the layer opacity to decrease the
effect if desired. It gives a lot of control and works nicely. On
very fuzzy images, I will sometimes I will use the the High Pass
filter, set the mode to Overlay or Soft Light and vary the opacity,
using a layer mask for paint sharpness in where needed.

Another option, depending on what software you use to print, is to
leave the image in RGB mode, convert to B&W (channel mixer,
desaturate, etc) then sharpen with PhotoKit Sharpener since the image
remains in RGB. I use IJC/OPM for my B&W, and it accepts RGB images,
and also has a neat channel mixer of its own for blending channels
for different effects (at least in the Windows version).

I use Deadman's custom sharpener for sharpening 16 bit grayscale scans.
Results are as good as PK sharpening, but without the inconvenience of
converting to RGB and the enormous file sizes.

Thanks Carl. I have dled it but don't have time to try it today. I used to do all my own sharpening with masks, etc.--tedious. I bought PK Sharpener and a lot of that was done more quickly, still giving me lots of control over the process, but it is more difficult to arrive at a workflow for QTR--I normally save a 'natively' sized file with minimal sharpening (i.e., just 'capture' more or less after RAW conversion--and of course, as you and others have said, it has to be done in RGB for PKS--creating more steps, etc.) and then don't do final sharpening until sizing. I'm going to try Deadman's and see how it works into a b/w workflow for QTR.

Why not, the images is digitised so what can possibly change.

Every time you make a conversion from one space to another, you
introduce data loss due to different gamuts and rounding errors. If
necessary, and if there is no other good way to achieve my goals, I
will convert, but if there is a good way to achieve my goal without
converting, that is usually my first choice. It is less of an issue
in 16 bit. With 8-bit files, I avoid any manipulations that can
degrade my file.

Richard,

Converting between different spaces results in data loss through rounding errors and other factors; which will result in image degradation. Working in 16-bit, though, you probably wouldn't notice whatever degradation occurs.

I agree with Lou...in general, I would avoid converting spaces unless really needed to complete a task that can't be done in your usual working space.

Deadman's custom sharpener is an action that will operate on 16 bit
gray files in Photoshop CS. I also have PK sharpener but using it with
16 bit gray scans of 4x5 negatives that are converted to RGB produces
very large file sizes (2 gb+) that really slows my system down (iMac
G5, 2 gb ram). I like Deadman's custom sharpener because I can stay in
16 bit gray mode and also it is very fast compared to PK.

Carl, I downloaded both of his sharpeners and have been comparing them to each other. I really like his Sharpener set also (has 4 actions to choose from). I was surprised how much control they gave me--and are easily usable with masking on duplicate layers and his Bruce Fraser set is really quite nice (and of course, that is what PK Sharpener is based on to a great degree, isn't it??). Thanks so much for this link. I'm very pleased with them. Using them with the gray-lab profile and adjusting to suit me in that profile, then sharpening is probably the workflow I'll refine. Ah, yes, also much faster than using PK Sharpener.

I've been following this thread and encouraged by Diane's experience
I downloaded the files, extracted them but couldn't figure out how
to get them to work in my PS-CS, Windows XP-Home setup. There was

You have to load the sharpening actions in PS CS in the actions pallete
menu. In the drop down actions pallette menu select Load Actions,
navigate to the location of your action file, and load.

Andrew,

Extract the files from the Stuffit archive and place those files in
the Photoshop Actions folder. On my WinXP machine the proper
location is Program Files > Adobe > Phoroshop CS > Presets >
Photoshop Actions.

Relaunch Photoshop and open the Actions palette. Click the right
facing arrow in the upper right hand corner and select "Load
Actions". You should see the actions you placed into the folder
above. Select the action you want and it will show up in your action
palette. Then run as you do any action.

Andrew,

They are plugins so you must extract them from you zip and then copy or move them to your plugin folder in PSCS--like this C/programs/Adobe/PSCS/presets/photoshop actions. Then--you need to go to your action palette and click on the small arrow at the right, choose 'load actions' and browse to the action folder and click on okay.

I liked them best when I duplicated layers and applied the sharpening but would then mask out in areas where I wanted less sharpening OR used the opacity of the layers to apply the sharpening.

Hope this helps.

Lou,

Thanks for the suggestion which I followed. However, when I
attempted to load there was an error message "could not load the
action because the file is not compatible with this version of
Photoshop." When you click on "load actions" the choice is limited
to "atn" files. The 4 downloaded files are 2 HQX files and 2 XLS
files. When I started to spell out a filename, the file would come
up and I got the error message by clicking on it. The HQX files
Properties indicate that they are opened by PS. The XLS files
are "unknown."

You need to unzip those files first with STuffit and choose all the formats so that it knows which files to associate unzipping with and where to place them. It will decode those particular files to an .atn.

Andrew, go here and dl Stuffit Expander, then associate all files with it and it will decode/open the files and you will have .atn files for your plugin folder.

Andrew,

The HQX files are stuffit archive files for downloading. They are
similar to ZIP files need to be expanded before you can use the
files. The ATN files are hiding inside the compressed HQX file. You
will need to download Stuffit expander to open these files and
extract the contents. Then you should be able to follow my earlier
procedure and use the actions.

Re: Photokit sharpener and B&W

Thanks Lou and Diane. I had to get the current edition, 8.5 of
Stuffit for Windows as 7.0 wouldn't work. Now all I have to do is
work my way through the actions. I've been using the High Pass
filter technique which gives really good sharpening to the final
print size, but I want to try something else also.
