7600 -- Switching black inks

7600 -- Switching black inks

2005-05-21 by Paul Roark

After I cleaned out my 7600, it would not accept the PK cart. I got a "wrong
ink" error message. So, I just put back in the MK cart and all is fine.

However, I'd previously put in a PK cart with MK ink in it to fool the
printer into showing all the media types. I did not go through the Epson
ink switching procedure because the ink in the carts is the same - Eboni.
So, I must have done something that got around an Epson safeguard. Maybe I
switched from MK to PK with the printer off.

Any ideas on a way to switch ink and avoid the error message would be most
appreciated.

Thanks.

Here is the easiest solution, go to this extremely huge page-
http://www.outbackphoto.com/printinginsights/pi013/Epson9600.html
scroll down to- 4/25/2004 How to change from matte black to photo
black without wasting money and ink.
Follow the directions, it works.
Know as the "african" method, despite the above description, it works
from PK to MK also.

Thanks Tyler. Maybe I followed that before, and then my cleaning procedure
messed me up again.

That Outback group has an amazing amount of useful information. Do you know
who or what they are?

MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-21 by joie puckett

Hello all,

Is excessive leaking a situation anyone else has encountered with MIS
UT-7 inks?

2200 Epson, ink opened and installed fresh today, 05-21-05.

Link below has 2 photos: one of the prints with ink leakage, and a
second image of the cartridges themselves--for what purpose, I don't
know. ;)

Top-most print was printed first, middle printout was printed second,
bottom print was last. Nothing was changed in regard to the cartridges
between the top-most and later prints in the photo, when the leaking
started up again [I say "again" because I had leaking on first install
when I first began to purge the system by printing on scrap paper, and
by refitting the cartridges, thought I had fixed it when the top-most
print had no spillage.] But, then it started up again.

any shared experiences, work-arounds, fixes...?

Paul,

Can you use that Ebony ink with a color Ultrachrome inkset and avoid having
to switch back and forth with the African method?

The MIS ebony is for matte papers and gives slightly better
dmax. They do make an ink for use on both matte and glossy
papers but I've never tried it.

No, but where? Why, out back of course.
Actually I don't know, but the name seems familiar as having been
around a very long time on all the lists. The "african method" was, I
think, worked out by someone else, and they posted it there.

RE: [Digital BW] Re: 7600 -- Switching black inks

2005-05-21 by Paul Roark

John,

As Walt indicated, Eboni is a matte black -- just more neutral and a bit
darker in some printers than the UC MK.

The reason I put it in a PK cart is to have the driver show all the media
types. "Premium Glossy" media type prints with a better dmax on matte paper
than do the matte media types. So, I'm just using a hack to get a bit of an
improvement from the dmax-challenged Epson 7600 driver. I might end up
abandoning the Epson driver for a rip that can deliver a real matte dmax.
But, especially on Windows, the rips have their own problems.

With respect to avoiding the ink switching problems, that is taken care of
with UT7. It prints on either media type without any ink changing required.
The 2 dark grays together deliver an excellent dmax even with the Epson
driver. Of course, Photoshop RGB curves are needed, and the MK is not used
at all.

(The MIS Universal K, as with all of those, is a hybrid pig-dye that I won't
use.)

RE: [Digital BW] MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-21 by Paul Roark

Joie,

(Those are the older UT7 carts. I'm not sure who would have filled them --
probably the old contractor.)

I sometimes have what your photos show happen on my systems also. I think
it is air or foam in the line. Usually it happens to me sometime after I've
done something with the inks in one of my large format printers.

New carts should have had a good enough vacuum in them that there should not
be foam. So, this loading job may have not had a very good vacuum.

Let them sit for a day and see if the ink will pool enough around the outlet
to avoid foam getting to the head. That would be my advice. I suspect
cleaning will pull the ink too fast, but I could be wrong there -- or on all
of this.

Good luck.

Paul,

Thank you for your response.

I purchased these within the last two weeks and installed today. Is
this issue of /older carts/ something I should take up with MIS in terms
of a possible error receiving these carts?

Thanks,
Joie

Re: [Digital BW] MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-21 by Brian Ellis

When I used MIS cartridges I used to almost always get that kind of thing
with the first few prints I made after installing new cartridges. As I
recall it disappeared on its own accord after three or four prints were
made. I was using a 1280 at the time.

I had the same problem with my 1160 using a CFS system, it's a real
pain in the ass and a problem I wish MIS would address. This very
problem is keeping me from using the UT7 inks with my new 1280.

Sorry I don't have a solution for you. Have you contacted MIS? Are
these pre-filled carts?

Don,

No, I haven't contacted MIS yet. I'm not sure how much the issue of
these pre-filled cartridges being "old" comes into play, and I'm not
even sure what that really means (that they may be older carts). Maybe
after I contact them on Monday, I'll have a better idea.

YUK! Have you had any satisfaction from MIS customer service. If
that happened to my wife's 2200 she'd be all over me like ugly on an
ape! And, rightfully so. I guess I'm glad I'm starting out with
converting a c86 to BO first before I go further down this road. It
will be interesting to see how this resolves out. MIS has
an 'opportunity' here and hopefully will cease it.
Thanks for the feedback, Mike

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by joie puckett

Mike,

The inks were installed on saturday morning and removed saturday night.
I will contact them Monday to see what they say. The only real issue
with the ink getting on the printer is related to the rollers. Luckily,
the ink leaked only onto the paper, and being wet when rolled out, found
itself on the rollers.

Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by mbrouphy

Doug,
The reading I've done here on this grouplist, Paul Roark's website,
and other information available through the group seems to indicate
that the c86 and MIS for BO printing is the greatest thing since
sliced bread. I'd be interested to see what the general opinions are
around the group on this. I originally wanted to use an older Photo
EX on a Win98 system for this; but, have had no feedback to my
request for info and experience with this printer for BO printing.
Thanks,
Mike

[Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by mbrouphy

Joie,
Your prints looked totally uneffected by the problem and only the
front and back ends got trashed. From what I could see on you
evidence pix the printed portraits look real nice and can only
imagine that you are pleased with the tonal quality, gradations,
contrast, etc. Can you please expound on that? There seems to be
some question on the suitability of the c86, which I would be using,
and MIS for BO printing.

But, it's a shame that this is a problem which has been going on for
some time with this system, though. Hopefully, my concerns will be

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking. [tonal ranges]

2005-05-22 by joie puckett

Mike,

I am not happy with the tonal range of the prints but that is not
anything I would blame on the inks. I am under deadline to produce
prints for a client, and don't have time to play/experiment with the new
inks. This is why I pulled them out last night and went back to epson
inks [so I could actually be /productive/.] To their credit, the inks
came out cleanly, and the epsons re-installed cleanly and quickly.

I absolutely plan on coming back to the MIS inks because the prints
produced were exactly what I wanted in terms of no color shift
[metasmerism], etc.. The only problem I still have to overcome is the
mid range values were extremely flat. I will post comparison images
[between the epson and the mis inks] in a similar manner to the leaking
images today.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by Douglas meeuwsen

OK......you are talking about the MIS-EZ inks, which paul roark has
developed for the c86, which paul really likes. If paul Really likes
them, you be assured that they work great...... However, when people
around here say "Black only" or "B.O", they are refering to using only
one pure black ink, and not 4 shades of black and grey. B.O is a
technic that is used on the 1280, and 2200, and the bigger machines,
and has a kind of nice grainy effect that people find works great for
certain images. The epson driver allows you to chose the "black only"
option, which shuts off all the colored inks. On the c86, it works
badly, nothing like the 1280, at least with the mac driver.

Hi Paul,

Digital Outback Photo is run by Uwe Steinmueller and his wife
Bettina. They live in the SF Bay area near San Jose (just North of
you) and have been very active in promoting digital photography,
printing and workflow since the "early days".

Uwe has been an energetic advocate for digital through his Website
and participation in many forums and workshops. Over the years, his
Website has grown to contain a great deal of valuable information (as
you mentioned) and is also a platform for marketing a number of
products including his own e-books, actions, workshops, etc.

You can get a quick bio of Uwe and Bettina at the bottom of
the "Editorial Team" page here:

Just some general info since you were curious...

Cheers!

Hmmm...I didn't get that impression from reading quite a bit of info

to work out black only printing on a Photo EX. It's a great printer

[Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking. [tonal ranges]

2005-05-22 by mbrouphy

Joie,
Thanks for the reply. When you do get those posted would you take
some time to verbally describe your impressions of the differences.
It's hard to tell at low res jpg how any subtleties actually look.
Thanks, Mike

Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by SteveZ

Oh great, I just ordered a complete set of MIS UT-7 cartridges last
Thursday for my 2200. Is this ink leakage a common problem? Will MIS
reimburse you for the wasted paper? For the past 2 months I've been
reading on this forum about how wonderful these inks are. Are there
any other negatives I should know about them? I just hate surprises.

[Digital BW] Re: Photo EX -- was: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by richard_h95050

Mike,

Yes, the Photo EX is a good old workhorse (I think I've still got one
kicking around here) -- but the operative term is "old". It's a
bit "long of tooth" when it comes to the rapidly evolving area of
digital B&W printing...

Black only is really designed for the newer printers like the 2200 or
the 1280 and takes advantage of their advanced printhead technology.
The same holds true for most of the current B&W printing techniques --
that is, they offer greater support for the newer printers and very
limited support for older models like the Photo EX.

Given the low cost of entry to pick up a good new or used current
model Epson, it would be worth your while to consider doing that. The
most compelling reason for that suggestion is the tremendous amount
of support (ink choices, profiles, curves, RIPs, etc.) that are
available for them and lacking for the Photo EX.

If you're serious about wanting to explore digital B&W, it would be
much easier to be working with the printers and inksets that you see
discussed on this (and similar) forums. Otherwise, you will be having
to do a lot of unnecessary experimentation on your own, and that's
time better spent making prints on a well-supported platform ;>)

No need to throw away the trusty Photo EX, though -- there's always
other tasks you can dedicate it to...

Hope this is helpful.

Richard

Richard,
Thanks for the discouraging words...<LOL> It's just I hate to throw
out equipment especially if there's still life in them there bones.

So, I guess I could use it for small prints that are non-archival
color prints that are destined to be less expensive alternatives to
the archival rag color prints I do. There is the possibility of
using the MIS Quad inksets they have available for the EX.

Any thoughts? I appreciate your assistance...Mike

Re: Photo EX -- was: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by richard_h95050

Hi Mike,

I know you said "discouraging words" in jest, but I really want to
emphasize that my suggestions were sincerely encouraging you to move
in a direction that wouldn't leave you discouraged with digital B&W
printing due to lack of support for the Photo EX ;>)

That said, there are lots of people printing on older equipment, I'm
sure -- so it just depends on how much energy you want to invest on
your own in getting a relatively unsupported printer working and
producing prints that meet your expectations.

The difference in the level of response you'll receive when posting a
question on the forum about a problem you're having getting good
results with an Epson 1280 (just as an example) versus an Epson Photo
EX is likely to be substantial -- only because so few people
currently have experience doing quad printing with the Photo EX.

Combine that with the fact that there are very few published curves,
profiles or RIPs (like QTR or IJC/OPM) that support that printer
along with available inkset limitations (Paul could better respond to
this, but I'm not sure the latest MIS inks and curves are even being
produced for the Photo EX) -- anyway, it just seems like an
invitation to getting frustrated and discouraged in itself ;>)

Since you're not already invested in a quad system for the Photo EX,
it would be a better path to put that money into supplies (carts or
inks and a CIS) for a current model. In the end, unless you're buying
into the Epson Pro Line printers, we spend much more on inks and
media than that one-time "bite" of purchasing the printer itself.

You can get completely set up with a C86 and MIS inks for about a
hundred dollars -- or if you are comfortable going onto eBay to make
a purchase, you can pick up a larger printer at very reasonable cost.
Then you have all the generous resources of Paul's curves, MIS
support as well as all the other fine people of this forum who will
be using the same printer and inksets and can help you through the
initial learning curve of getting good digital B&W output. Make sense?

Of course, once you're able to produce prints that you like and
you're feeling confident with how to fine-tune the workflow, you can
always go back and play with the Photo EX -- or, you can use it as
you suggested for color work, text output or printing documents,
correspondence and such. No need to toss it ;>)

Anyway, that's my two cents and probably more than you asked for.
BTW, since you mentioned you do "archival rag color prints" already,
are you using an Epson Ultrachrome printer for that? If so, take a
look at QTR -- it does a very nice job with digital B&W output for
less than the cost of a set of quad inks for any Epson printer...

Cheers!
Richard

Re: Photo EX -- was: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-22 by mbrouphy

I'll check into QTR and other similar, too. Once we replace the 2200
with a 2400 or 4000 or newer. I will be using a c86 with the MIS ez
inkset it looks like to do a new line of notecards and small archival
prints of infrared images on EAM and Polar Matte from Red River
running off my laptop. Any larger prints will be off the 2200.

Thanks for all you help. I appreciate it. Mike

I think the C86 with MIS EZ inks is the best value there is in B&W printing
(8x10 max size). However, I don't think the average C86 is capable of what
I'd consider good "black only" printing.

The 1280 and 2200 (and 4000, etc.) are capable to good BO printing, but the
only ink I've found I like for BO is MIS's Neutral Photo Black (what I refer
to as PKN) on a paper like Kirkland Pro Glossy.

Eboni used in BO arrangement is very archival, and some like the tone and
texture of the prints, but that is just not my style.

I have not used many of the older printers, but my 1160 was not up to the
job, in my opinion.

I've done BO with a 1520, and it is not up to the challenge. With
good ink, something like the 9500 is decent, but still looks best on
papers that have a little ink spread (dot gain), and materials like
canvas that help hide the dots.

I have 1160 printers now, and previously had a Photo EX. I have tried BO
printing with both printers.

I found the EX made lousy BO prints; from the 1160 the BO prints were
significantly better (though still poor compared with using quadtone inks in the
same printer).

Um, I think the message is that the C86 and the four MIS replacement
inks for quadtone printing is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not BO.

[Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-23 by Randy Rancier

With the C84, which I believe is basically the same as the C86
except for a different case, I get banding when printing BO with
Eboni. Banding is not an issue when using the whole EZ inkset.

spongeless carts leaking....

2005-05-23 by Douglas meeuwsen

I had that on one of the outlets on my 1280 MIS spongless carts. It was
leaking like crazy. basically the valve was sort of stuck open, because
when I used the bottom fill adaptor to get the ink to output, the tip
of the syringe got stuck in the rubber grommet and moved it a little
bit to the side. I fixed it by wiggling the syringe/bottom-fill-adaptor
tip inside the hole until it stopped leaking. Keep in mind that while I
was doing that, the ink was just dripping out of the hole, all over my
hands and the table/floor/pathway-to -the-sink. It was obvious when it
was fixed, because the flood shut off suddenly. When I refilled the
cart last week I was more careful about pushing the tip into the hole,
and all was fine. I think the tip of the adaptor is too small and gets
the rubber grommets out of whack. I think I will modifly the the tip
and try to see if I can get a better design. Basically I plan to sand
down the tip until it is exactly the best diameter for the hole. I will
keep you posted. ....Doug M

I too get banding with BO on my C84. It is wonderful with the EZ complete
set.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: MIS inks leaking.

2005-05-27 by Brubaker family

I have used an Epson 1200 with the Eboni ink for BO
printing and was very pleased with the results. Since
the EX prints at the same resolution as the 1200 it
should do well too, it just won't be able to make
quite as large a print due to its 12" max paper width.
