2006-03-31 by Art

Ok. I just wanted to say that I am very thankful that this web site
is here and that you guys/gals are willing to help out so many
people with their questions. Thanks again.

I've only just started with converting my darkroom to digital and
you guys have been great.

With that said, I have been reading past questions and I was shocked
to see that one of the members (around March 21st ) was mentioning
that the results of his BO prints from his 220 showed better results
than the 2400 with its mulitple inks!

I have been getting ready to go down and get the 2400 but now I am
totally second guessing this. IF the 220 gives 4x6 through 8x10 top
quality why spend the extra money unless you are going over 8x10?

Is this true? is the quality of the prints close to darkroom quality
with a great workflow environment? WIth that in mind how are the
color prints from the 220?

PS is this only with the EBONI INKS for BO?

Some please help.

On dpreview forum: Printers

http://www.dpreview.com/

Someone recently remarked how very nice the R220 printed with its
factory color cartridges. You could probably do a quick search there.

Keep in mind that the R220 factory inks are dye base.

I just bought the R220. Have not set it up yet. But I will strictly
be using it for B&W.

can it accept dye pigment inks for black and white printing?

I have just purchased a set of pigment based B&W inks from MIS for the
R220. And yes, these pigment based inks are made to work with the
printer.

When you say "dye pigment", do you mean 'pigment'?

[Digital BW] Re: Epson 220

yes I mean pigment.

Are you planning on doing color and black and white with it?

I plan on just doing B&W. The inks left MIS for delivery today, so
hopefully I will be receiving them early next week.

I will be attempting to set up the R220 with the MIS B&W inks. I may
sell the original dye colored set.

What prompted you to buy the 220? besides price. Did you hear it
would give you great quality fine art prints with the MIS inks?

Pretty much so. I had originally decided on the C86. I found it
discounted at Radio Shack. Then, through research and communication, I
found Paul Roark...who steered me in to the R220. For a beginner in
B&W, he basically said that it would offer a better foundation for
advancement than the C86. Although the C86 is a good printer, and he
still uses it.

Art,

Get the 220. I have been using mine for about three months, with MIS
inkset. Stunning black and white, which is only what I use it for. I never
thought digital could equal darkroom. Well, I was wrong.

I am considering another 220, one for color and one for black and white. Or
maybe one for glossy and one for matte, or maybe three. At that price, I
don't see how a person could go wrong, unless you need larger than 8.5x11.

Hi Frank

I will be setting up my 220 next week. I planned on setting it up with
the new Neutral inkset that I will be getting from MIS. Did you set up
your 220 with the original color dye inks that came with the printer?
Should I have any problems setting it up this way?

Also, are you familiar with 'BO'(Black Only) printing with the 220.
Have you done this with this printer? If you have, can you elaborate
on how you would set up the printer to do this?

Thanks much

Mike

Thank you Frank and Mike. I am going down to purchase a 220 today. I will look into the MIS inks as well.
Mike why do you use a 220 for color? and if so, what inks for archival purposes. Does the quality of a 4x6 through a 8.x10 hold up to the more expensive printers?

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 220

2006-04-01 by Frank Vincent

Well, I will simplify this very complicated process :-)
1. Put in MIS R200 UTR2W inkset.
2. Turn on printer.
3. Print photo

I have printed using Picassa II, as well as Photoshop 7.
I have printed without converting the photo to black and white or
manipulating it in any way.
Amazing, isn't it! It is really too easy.

The only problem I have had, on one print, is using the glossy setting on
matte paper. Severe banding was what happened, though it was consistent and
looks kind of cool to me.

I have not done BO printing, but do not see the need with these inks.

Now I must learn to use the various techniques in Photoshop to tweak the
process, do a better monitor calibration, and learn to use the profiles Paul
has posted. But this will be going from happy to happier.

It really depends on how you define "better results". BO prints have
some qualities that many feel are superior to full ink prints, but
also one major shortcoming that disqualifies it for many. In my
experience it's great for some images and poor for others. By
installing the full R2 inkset in the 220 you can have both BO and full
ink printing.

However, the plot thickens when the 2400 enters the scene. Not only
does it do bigger prints, its full ink prints are superior (IMO) to
those produced by R220/R2, plus it allows a wider range of color
tones. So it's not such a simple answer. I hope this helps.

Clayton

Hi Art

I may have mistakenly described my future usage with the R220. My
present plans will be to only print with the MIS B&W inkset. I will
be
getting the Neutral B&W set. Perhaps later, if things turn out
well,
I will get the Warm set.

I will not be using the original color ink set that came with the
printer. However, others have mentioned that the original 'dye' set
that comes with the printer, does indeed print very nicely in
color.
The inks that come with the R220 are not archival. The MIS inks are
archival, being pigment based.

Mike

Are you going to print BO and full 6 ink black and white prints from the ink set you are getting from MIS? Are you then going to need Quadtone to print full balck and white to over ride the Epson driver?
And I guess you are also saying that MIS makes pigment color for teh R220 as well.

Not sure about BO, but yes full B&W prints.

I am not aware of needing Quadtone for this. I may decide to download
some custom profiles from Paul Roark.

I don't think they make a pigment color inkset. But they do make
a 'warm' set of B&W inks for the 220. I am going to start with the
neutral B&W set.

I found them searching around the MIS website:

If you click on the square for the respective 220 inkset, it will

Paul,

Are these files on your local machine? They don't show up for me no
matter what browser I use (I've tried 4 on the Mac).

For instance,

<http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/R220_R2_Readme_files/image007.jpg>

Should show the 1st image on the page, but I get:

"The requested URL /res09aij/R220_R2_Readme_files/image007.jpg was not

Yes, MS Internet Explorer works, but Firefox and Opera (and perhaps
other standards-compliant browsers) don't display the images.

Paul, I see that you have used MS Word to prepare the page. It has a lot
of proprietary MS markup code -- there are 247 instances of invalid HTML
on the page, according to http://validator.w3.org

Perhaps the list members should pass the hat around and buy you a proper
HTML editor, or perhaps one of us could clean up the pages for you. It
would be a small thing to do, as a token of thanks for your contribution.

Yes, the problem seems to be the way Word treats images. I have Front Page,
but, frankly, was too lazy to bother learning it. (The fewer programs I
have to learn the happier I am.) Perhaps a Word upgrade (I'm at Office
2003), using Outlook, or finding a simple way to write in Front Page would
help things.

I design the inksets to work with as many approaches as possible. So, the
Epson driver is the default, assumed driver for them all. The newer inksets
will also print OK with no image editor at all, but Photoshop and Photoshop
Elements is the recommended image editor because they both use a "Print
Preview" that allows the use of ICCs made with Roy Harrington's "Create ICC"
program. So, the main workflow I'm now using includes Photoshop, Roy's
Create ICC, and the Epson driver. For those who want control of every ink,
a rip like QTR is the next step, but they are not necessary, and I don't use
them for most of what I do.

Hello Paul,

The editor in Front page can be used independently of the other
features. I've been using that way for years, as it frees you from
the diabolical clutches of the parts that want to "manage" your web
site for you.

I also tried other WYSIWYG editors and still kept coming back the the
FP one, as it seemed to have the best balance of features, interface
and behavior.

Paul,

You want to take a look at Arachnophilia. It is a great web site editor,
HTML, CSS, Perl, etc. all in one Java based, cross platform, free
application. I have just been using it for a couple weeks now and it seems
as though it can do it all. It is not a graphical type of web design
program, just a very nice editor. Very easy to use, very little learning
curve.

I would never want to use MS Word for this.

In the meanwhile, for those of you using Firefox it is possible to
view the images by opening them with the "IE tab" plugin which acts
exactly as IE.
Have not found a roundabout for Opera though.

Since I am using Photoshop Elements, I probably cannot not use your ICC maker program. I think you designed it for full version? I think I will have to use QuadRip?

Elements uses the ICCs just fine. It's in the Color Management option of
the Print Preview. See the box below the preview image.

You can also make ICCs. For this, you use Roy Harrington's "Create ICC,"
which is in the QTR download package.

What Elements does not support is the curves that will have tone control
information on them for future inksets (UT-3D, for example). However, I'll
probably post these curves in a way that Elements users can utilize them.
For example, you can drag a curves layer from one file to another in
Elements. So, you would not be able to modify the curves, but you would be
able to embed the curve into an ICC and linearize your system. For the
UT-R2 inkset, however, these curves are not relevant.

Does not work with Mac OS X.4.5 and the latest Firefox and latest IE
Tab.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Paul, why don't you just email one of us the Word files and the jpegs
and tell us to lay it out for you? You're doing us a favor by giving us
the information; I for one would be happy to return the favor by
slapping together pages for you in Dreamweaver.

I think using PDF format may be the answer.

Try http://home1.gte.net/res09aij/R220_R2_Readme.pdf and see if it works.

PrimoPDF seems to be an amazingly simple tool and solution.

Thanks Tom.

Works just fine with FireFox and the links open nicely in another tab.

Perfect!

That's the ticket!

Thanks,
