R1800/3mk failure (my error) HELP!!!

R1800/3mk failure (my error) HELP!!!

2008-10-18 by Sarah Renkes

Hi all,

I just got my 1800, along with the required inkset from MIS. I thought I had ordered both the
PK and Glop cleaning carts but mistakenly only ordered the Glop. I asked an MIS associate if I
had to use the PK cleaning cart and he said to just install the Eboni in that position and print
a bunch and it would clear itself out. I did this, then went on to try and print my first b/W
print.

I get nothing but a ghost image. Two nozzle checks revealed almost no ink coming out of
any of the EK positions. I cleaned twice and that went down to none at all.

Stuck....what did I do wrong?

thanks,
Sarah

Mmmm, no. I didn't. Am I supposed to? I never did that using BO with EK in my 2200. And
there is definitely ink coming out of that hole...,though when I pull the MK/EK, it doesn't
appear as if any ink has been used at all. Same with the Glop/EK. However the PK/EK
clearly shows a reduction in the ink level.

Still stumped.

thank you,
Sarah

The cleaning cart isn't your problem. I've done the same as you with
my R1800.

Try using the bottom fill adapter to suck some ink through the exit
port and get the flow going.

Either that or make sure the air hole is vented. Post a picture of
your cartridge if you need help.

Thanks, Roger, I will try both suggestions. However, I'm not clear how you use the fill
adapter to suck some ink through....?

Unscrew the needle from the syringe and screw the bottom fill adapter
on. Then press it into the exit port of the cartridge and pull on the
syringe to draw ink into it.
Paul Roark recommends one that's cut down a bit. I've done this with
a razor blade.

Darn it. I'm not filling these carts myself. This my first set and I bought them already filled
from MIS. I don't have the equipment to do what you have suggested.

yikes. this is turning into a bit of a nightmare. I have someone waiting for a print and I'm
completely stuck.

From my refilling episodes, I would spread out a paper towel and "rap" the cartridge firmly to get ink headed south.

I am going to start by apologizing: you probably won't like what I
am about to write. I have been having the same problems that you
describe since I bought my r1800. I have been throwing good money
after bad. It is a daytime nightmare. I suggest you dispose of the
printer and buy something else.

First I used carts from MIS and now I have a continuous flow
system. I use Eboni in the Y, MK and PK slots and PKN in the R, B
and C slots. I seldom get all working properly but sometimes I can
use either the Eboni or PKN inks.

The cleaning cycle Epson has on this machine is aggressive. It
creates bubbles in the cart and the ink does not flow. I do not
think I have particulate clogs. I suspect the use of this
aggressive cleaning system was a matter of Epson policy to increase
its ink sales. I think more ink has been through the waste outlet
onto the pads than onto paper. I have had to have the counter reset
and the soak pads changed at a cost of £125 cUS$220.

I have used a syringe to draw out the ink through the cart exit.
(see the post above). I no longer switch off the machine because,
when you switch on, those lovely people at Epson designed the
machine to do a head clean. Someone once told me that, at the close
of business each working day, top Epson Executives in Japan roll
about on the floor laughing at the money they are making from their
inks.

Before that change, using the Epson maintenance routine, I was back
to a nearly white piece of paper after doing the nozzle checks.

This morning I ran the SSC utility. I wonder if it is less
aggressive than the Epson one or if I am deluding myself. I
started, would you believe with perfect nozzle checks in the MK and
PK positions. I printed a half page of the purge file from MIS.
Ran the SSC cleaning cycle and had perfect nozzle checks for the B,
PK, MK, and C positions. In both cases ink was flowing in the other
channels but there were about 10% gaps. I printed a half purge page
again, and went to walk the dog – yes, the dog not the printer. The
printer is lucky I don't kick dogs!

I ran another SSC cleaning cycle and nozzle check. The Y, M and C
channels were perfect but ink from the MK and PK nozzles only fired
through about 10% of the nozzles. No ink flowed at all through the
R and B carts. Go figure!

I will wait three hours and try again.

Suggestion - life's too short - go get a R1900. Mine works great and
it appears the 1800 cartridges are compatilble with 1900 as the
refillable ones I got were for 1800 and worked just fine in 1900.

Re: [Digital BW] R1800/3mk failure (my error) HELP!!!

2008-10-21 by Le Globe Trotteur

I am not sure if that can help. I use the SSC utility with my R220 and have been doing that for 2 years now. I have a CIS and use Dye Ink. When I get a nozzle that does not fire, I use the option in the SSC utility to do a initial reset and not the cleaning cycle. I know it does use ink. I have a waste tank outside the printer that collects the ink. I then let the printer sits for 30mn and everything works fine after. I think that most of the time the nozzles not firing up may be due to some air bubbles in the tanks.

to a nearly white piece of paper after doing the nozzle checks.

I printed a half purge page
again, and went to walk the dog - yes, the dog not the printer. The
printer is lucky I don't kick dogs!

I ran another SSC cleaning cycle and nozzle check. The Y, M and C
channels were perfect but ink from the MK and PK nozzles only fired
through about 10% of the nozzles. No ink flowed at all through the
R and B carts. Go figure!

I will wait three hours and try again.

Colin

Re: [Digital BW] R1800/3mk failure (my error) HELP!!!

2008-10-21 by Roger

If I were you I'd get a syringe, bottom fill adapter and $18 bottle of
Eboni and maybe an extra chip and cart or two for when they go bad.
Then you will be able to print with 3MK for months to come for just
that initial price.

Re: [Digital BW] R1800/3mk failure (Ugh)

2008-10-21 by Sarah Renkes

Colin, don't apologize. I am thankful to be hearing frm those of you that have had issues
with this printer, because before I decided to get one (it is used, no warranty), I read only
glowing reports about them, in specific reference to the 3Mk method of printing. There
wasn't anything negative on the board here that would have made me pause. Your report
is certainly not a good one by a long shot...so sorry!

If only i had done more homework on other forums, I would have read the countless
frustrated pleas from others trying to solve the very same problems I'm having with
it....and I would have re-thought my choice. That said, however, I absolutely love the look
of the 3MK print I did manage to squeak out, so it is all doubly maddening.

I have gone through an entire set of color inks already, but have only made ONE print, and
a 3MK one at that. My paper feed probelms mean that I have to keep shutting off the
printer to get the red paper light to stop flashing....just deleting the print job will not
suffice. So, every time I try to feed paper through the front loader and it fails, the red light
goes on, and won't go off or let me attempt another print job until I shut the printer off. Anyone know how to reset this differently? I am on a mac so the SSC utility is not an
option for me, unfortunately.

I have dashed to Staples three times now when the ink has run out in a color position,
which prevents me from printing or even loading paper. It is AWFUL. I called an Epson tech
and he confirmed that all operation stops when any of the cartridges are out (or READ as
out, since I know they still have ink in them!). My 2200 would let me print BO even if a
color ink showed empty. Not this one.

I do intend to purchase a refilling kit to at least fill the Eboni carts myself. Other than that
I may just lay my head down on the desk and have a good cry. And begin the saving
process all over again for another printer. I waited a year before being able to purchase
this one.

"Diappointed' hardly covers it.

thanks all,
Sarah

Hello,

I am sorry to read about your frustrating experience.

Reading that money is tight and that this one will have to do for a
year here are my suggestions:

1- Feed it only from the rear with 8.5x11 or larger paper. Make final
prints on any high quality paper and proofs and normal prints on cheap
matte (yet excellent) PremierArt BW or RedRiver Polar Matte.

2- If you do not need to print in color, next time a color cart gets
empty cause of cleaning cycles etc. put your money for this one cart
toward empty refillable carts. Fill them with Paul Roark's homemade
clear Carbon-6 base (without the Photoflo, so it's a simple mix of
distilled water and glycerin U.S.P.). If you cannot find empties, buy
cleaning carts from MIS and replace the chips with your Epson cart
chips (it's easy and works fine). Chip reseter needed.

I've been running my R1800 like this for months and it's the only
system-ink type that reliably provides top quality prints.

Tried colors, OEM color, diluted expensive grey water etc. and the
best from that printer always came with this simple and very
innexpensive 3MK+water-glycerin setup.

Denis, thanks so much. That is practical advice I can use, and beats getting tears on my
keyboard.

And I will not even waste my time/ink with another front paper load attempt. I just
successfully printed a 4X6 business card using the rear feeder. Whee.

Thanks again for your suggestions,
Sarah

I found my 1800 with both the 3-MK and 3-PKN in it tended to clog,
whereas I don't have clogs with the 3MK and Eboni-6 or just clear
base in it. I think it might have been just too much PK and MK, with
insufficient dilute ink to rinse the pad.

> ... I do not think I have particulate clogs.

I suspect the "clogs" I was experiencing were caused by junk from the
parking pad sticking to the surface of the head, but I didn't
continue the experiments long enough to know what exactly was going
on.

Gar, that sounds like my stuff, though the photos I think you are referring to are set-up
scenes with friends and strangers, no family in them. My website is down for the moment
while I make some changes.

I am doing quite a bit of color work now and was hoping to use the r1800 for that as well,
but honestly don't think I am up to the other problems that would most likely add to the
list. Will most likely use cleaning carts with Carbon-6 base in them as Denis suggested
and call it a day.

3x5 cards are a good idea. I'd better get a big stack ~sigh~

thanks!
Sarah

This is an update to my post in message 9377.

After the wait, and head cleaning there was no significant
improvement. Until later in the day. Before I went out yesterday
the position improved considerably.

This morning after the first clean there were two gaps, each next to
the other in a corner of the blue channel and two gaps in the PK
channel, one in each corner. The next cycle was fine in the PK
channel but two gaps, in different locations in the blue channel.
The next cycle showed that there were two gap positions in the blue
channel, but not in the same places as before, and a gap occurred in
the red channel.

I printed a further half page of the purge file asked for a nozzle
check. I don't know how it happened but a cleaning cycle
commenced. After this all channels were fine except the red channel
which only printed half the nozzles. And I was so close! I need
this channel to profile some sample sheets of HPRBaryta 315 gsm.
(Des anyone have such a profile using MIS RC Easy Neutral RCN-4-PK?)

Not knowing what the Auto Head Cleaning function did, but I hoped it
might just sense that the red channel needed cleaning, I tried it.
The error message said to the effect that it had not been successful
and to do a manual clean. I did this and only the yellow and cyan
channels are working properly.

In this period the machine has been kept on so the heads have not
been I contact with the sponge pads.

That was late afternoon. A bit ago I ran another nozzle check. The
Y, M and C positions were OK, the others about 80% OK. After
printing a purge file, cleaning again and another nozzle check. The
Y, M, C and B channels are OK and the others worse. With one more
try the M and C channels are OK. The Y is bout 60% OK and the MK
about 40% OK. The other channels have little or no ink flowing.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Colin

Try leaving it turned ON and letting it sit that way overnight.

The next day, try a nozzle check. Do not! run a cleaning cycle. Try
another nozzle check in a few hours if the first one failed.

Also, did you draw a little ink from the cart exit port before
installing the cart into the printer? If not, there could be a huge
bubble near the exit port, preventing good ink flow.

I really recommend against using the auto head clean- if there's a
channel that's just not printing it seems to suck out a lot of ink
from the others.

I think you're better off doing nozzle checks and manual head cleans
and purge prints.

I agree with the other poster about using the bottom fill adapter on
your carts, especially ones not seeming to print at all (for stubborn
channels try dripping a little bit of cleaning fluid on the spike they
go into and on the park pad).

I had one R1800 which just couldn't keep a consistent nozzle check no
matter what. Pretty soon it didn't work any better with the OEM carts
and inks. Epson replaced it with a new model that has no clogging
issues at all.
