another emax 1 + CF reader problem

another emax 1 + CF reader problem

2011-12-13 by brendanrenne@...

My apologies for asking help with this topic; I spent a loooong time trying to figure this out for myself, and even thought I had it, but clearly I do not.

I am trying to replace my emax HD SE's hard drive with the PCD-50B. I have the SCSI cable set up correctly, and I am using a SanDisk 512mb CF card via a PCMCIA adapter. I copied the jumper settings from Ted Summers' site.

I downloaded EMXP and thought I had formatted said sandisk 512mb card. I opened up the emax, installed the PCD-50B with the CF card in the PCMCIA adapter and turned on the emax, fully expecting it to start up.

It didn't.

I booted it from the floppy disk containing the 1.1 HD OS, which worked, and then tried to use the 'Master->Special->Format HD' function. The 50B lights up and it passes the 'formatting HD', 'loading bank "untitled 1 ", and gets as far as 'saving software' when it gets to the HD error screen and that's it.

I purchased the PCD-50B from the a4000t.com website, which makes me think that it has the correct firmware (I think the website even makes this claim); nevertheless, tomorrow I am going to try to talk my girlfriend into letting me install this thing in her PC and updating its firmware. If this doesn't work, I have to say I am totally lost.

If anyone can offer any kind of help, I would really appreciate it!

Yeh I'm having the same exact problem here.

No solution yet...

Well- not having seen your setups I can't speak to whether you are doing
anything wrong / bad cable, etc.

As Emax doesn't format more than 20MB, I use 32MB flash and have had no
problems with them.
I can read banks, write banks, boot from the PCD-50B.
Emax 1 keyboard and rack
Emax 2 keyboard

I have used these for the Emax 1:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/32MB-SD-Secure-Digital-Card-BQH-/370301814447?pt=Digital_Camera_Memory_Cards&hash=item5637b546af

I sold 37 of the PCD-50b units to group members and with the correct
firmware and correct jumpering these work.
I haven't had any of the 37 units returned....

SO - what firmware is in the units?
You will have to put it in a PC to check it.

I have the updater with firmware that works.
I can potentially post it to the group or put it somewhere and share a link.

But you will have to have a PC to update the drives if they have the wrong
firmware.... disclaimer- I am not responsible if you damage the drives.

Thanks,
Ted

One other thought- it is possible if you have a corrupt OS disk, that the
SCSI functionality could be affected.

Just tried with another version of the SE HD OS on floppy, same problem.

I did just double check all connections and jumpers. Jumpers set as per http://djtbs1.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/some-install-related-pics/pcd-50b-in-an-emax-1-rack-note-the-stripe-position-on-the-cable-and-there-is-only-1-jumper-to-set-termination/ , SCSI cable pin 1 to connection 1 (to the rear) on digital board, and pin 1 on SCSI card reader.

Tried with 256MB card, no luck, tried with 128MB card, no luck... you think the cards are too big? I have some smaller ones kicking about *somewhere* round here! Haven't looked at them for years.

I have an old computer with a SCSI card in it, I presume it will have an internal connection I can use with the same cable if I need to update the firmware. Found possible link to updated firmware at bottom of thread at http://www.emusonacid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3637

Don't want to mess about flashing firmware though unless that is really the problem!

That is the same firmware I have, as far as I can tell (without loading it
actually into a PC and looking at it).

v1.28 is the latest (which is what that is).

There is a version of 1.28 that is Read ONLY- that is denoted by "R" in the
version of firmware that is shown in the updater.

You can't see it just looking at the drive in windows device manager, IIRC.

Re: another emax 1 + CF reader problem

2011-12-14 by mcnik_k

Just took the SCSI Card Reader out of the Emax, installed my old SCSI card in my PC, attached the reader...

Firmware is 01.28.

Can read and write to the card reader fine when it was on the PC.

Reattached everything to the EMAX.

Still not working :-(

Don't know what else to do.

Could it be the card adapter?

Can anyone throw me a line?

Re: another emax 1 + CF reader problem

I figured this out yesterday and got my emax to run with the 50B as the hard drive. Here's how:

1. the guy who sold me the emax said that it was an HD SE, but that the SE sticker had 'come off'. I believed him because he had perfect ebay feedback, and it included the HD SE manual. Turns out he was wrong; it was only an EMAX HD. As someone else in this group said, you cannot use a flash card for the HD unless the emax has been updated to an SE. or so it would seem.

2. I tried to use both EMX and Omniflop to format a floppy disk for use in the EMAX and neither worked. I had to format the floppy in the actual emax first, and then install the SE upgrade (with omniflop) followed by the 'plus' OS (using EMX) onto the emax-formatted floppies. Someone said something on here about how the floppy drives in the old emaxes can go out of spec; this is what happened.

hope this helps.

Thanks.

My Emax shows EmaxSE HD Rev1.1 in 'Special'.

Wondering if 16 or 32 bit PCMCIA cards has anything to do with it?

What brand card read you all using?

I am using the PCMCIA card reader (and 2 gb transcend CF card) sold with the PCD-50B at a4000T.com.

How are you making the SE HD-formatted floppies? Are you formatting them and copying the OS onto them entirely via your computer? Or are you formatting them and copying the OS from the old emax hard drive entirely within the emax?

If you haven't done so already, I recommend doing what I did, formatting them in the emax, and copying the OS onto them from your computer via omnifloppy. I would make sure your problem isn't the old technology (emax, its floppy drive and old HD), which is of course most likely to be problematic, before I would suspect the 50B, PCMCIA or flash card.

OK- so that means the reader is fine.

It is possible there is some incompatibility with the Card or Adapter.
What do you have for those?

Please be as specific as possible - model #s and specs of the media, etc.

Did you use the same SCSI cable with the drive in the Emax as in the PC?

Yeah, that 2gb didn't work for me either. Try a different card.

Yeah, that 2gb didn't work for me either. Try a different card.

Thanks all for your replies.

Card adapter is 'Sandisk' Pcmic pc card ATA I got from Hong Kong... TBH I don't think it is a real SanDisk.

Card I am working with is a Kodak CompactFlash 128mb I used to use for a camera.

I have just tried a SCSI HDD in the Emax and it seems to stick at 'saving bank' and also is making no noises when formatting. Checked on computer and is OK. Tried another SCSI cable as well.

What size is the SCSI HDD?
It might be helpful if you post some pictures to group section so we can see what parts you are talking about.

Hey there,

SCSI HDD is a Quantum Fireball 500mb FRBLS 655-0272 like the one at http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200382204165+&item=200382204165 - goodness that is a lot of money that one is selling for! Got mine for £10

Compact Flash is a Kodak 128 MB like http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/compactflash-card-reviews/kodak-premium-flash-memory-card-128-mb-compactflash/po3-141379963,70/

Compact Flash PCMCIA converter is a SanDisk like http://www.suntekstore.co.uk/product-10002355-Sandisk+PCMCIA+Compact+Flash+Card+Reader+Adapter+for+Laptop.html (I doubt it is a real SanDisk)

Am getting a 32mb card to try out, if I can't get it going Jammie is going to have a look at it.

Thanks!

Re: [emax] Re: another emax 1 + CF reader problem

2011-12-16 by Ted Summers

The ATA compatibility of the CF card could be messing things up.... what does it say is the max transfer rate- the page doesn't indicate?
If this is PIO / DMA capable then that may make it a higher speed card and the response times may be too fast for Emax.

Keep in mind (as I have posted many times), Emax use a 5380 SCSI 1 controller with max transfer of 1.5M/s

ATA is 33/66/100 or even 133 M/s

So you can see how the data volume and potentially the timing might overwhelm the bus.

As to the HD- maybe someone else can comment on the compatibility of the drive.
I have never put bigger than a 40MB in my Emax 1.

Verify that you actually have the TERM resistors in place.
My drives had resistors that were removable and the TERM jumper.

I had to buy the TERM resistors as they were missing from the drive....
They were cheap (like 50 cents each), but without them you aren't terminated.
Just because a jumper is there and on doesn't mean the resistor networks are there.

In that case- if you have an internal terminated cable, you would remove the TERM jumper and use the cable.

nik i put the drive in my sehd emax keyboard and put in a sandisk 512mb card with the os and banks on it

it does not see the drive bank error messages

so i put a blank 32mb card in and tried to format it and again it went through all the motions and then bank error

i conclude that its the drive that is in error as the ones i had from ted which was in the machine works and this new one does not

ted can you please send your copy of the firmware for me to flash

also can some upload a good copy of the os sehd plus os as the one in the files section is currupt as it wont load the banks

thanks

now i put this drive in a pc and it reads and writes to the cf card

so it reads and writes but definetly does not work with the emax

and takes ages to go through the routines of format and saving software

on my other 1 it formats in seconds andwrites the os in seconds

same for when using a zip drive its very fast at formating andsaving the os

so i think if we flash these with the version that ted uses for the firmware i think every thing should be ok

right the drive does work the os disks in the files section are duff

i got a fresh disk plus 1.0 os

and the drive works

instantly formats the card drive in seconds

and loads every time

need to format disk in the emax as if done in exmp you get bank errors

i will upload the files to the files section

PCD-50b drive in Emax

2011-12-18 by Ted Summers

I think perhaps it needs to be stated for folks buying these drives from other sites about its known limits when using the PCD-50b drive in the Emax.
I believe I was quite clear in my statements when selling the batch of drives I had, but perhaps the other sites are not explaining the compatibility.

Emax is SCSI-1 TARGET only (SCSI ID) based SCSI, which has no support for LUNs.
PCD-50b drives are TARGET (SCSI ID) and LUN (Logical Unit Number) based SCSI (which was added in SCSI-2 or SCSI-3 specification).

Therefore, Emax can ONLY access TARGET (ID - which is set with the ID jumpers) LUN 0, because it cannot detect or send to specific LUN #s.

Where a LUN # isn't specified, a SCSI command will be interpreted by the drive as going to LUN 0.
It so happens that the PC Card slot is LUN 0, and therefore that slot works with Emax.
No other slot will work in the Emax.
The other slots are LUN 1, LUN 2, etc.
There is no known way (unless there is a firmware hacker somewhere on the forum) to make a different slot LUN 0.

I hope that clears up the misconceptions out there floating about.

Regards,
Ted

thanks ted yes i have your original message

i dont think there are any samplers that allow luns

luns where set up for multi cdrom machine drives so that you could access different cdroms

basically a server type multidisk

great for pc and mac but pita for scsi samplers especially scsi 1 like the emax

our problem was the actual software for the emax was the problem they were not working

as i put your drive that i had from you and it would not work either even though i it did before it was the os that i was using from the files section

so i new it was not your drive and not my new drive

thats when i decided to get my archive drive out and find my
e2 files and os files that i had backed up

once i found the os i loaded it onto a new floppy which i formated in the emax then i loaded that into the emax with your drive and it worked then i swapped drives and it worked on my new drive

so all was good i have updated the os,s in the files section to include the proper se 1.1

the sehd 1.1

the hd plus 1.0

thanks for your help

can you give me a price for the 2 chips thanks jammie

Jammie-

Wasn't speaking in regards to this, and you.... I have had several emails over the past days that indicate this may be a problem - that how SCSI works in samplers and in relation to the drives isn't being explained by other places selling these drives.

Thanks,
Ted

Regards,
Ted

Re: another emax 1 + CF reader problem

2011-12-18 by mcnik_k

Thanks Jammie!

It is working here now as well :-)

I tried putting the Emax Plus 1.0 operating system onto floppy using EMXP, but was having problems, so I tried doing it onto my windows formatted Kodak 128mb CF card, but that in the machine, and BOOF it worked straight away!

Everything is so much quicker.

Saves and loads fine.

35 banks at my disposal.

Thanks for all your help, I think I'd have got frustrated and given up if you weren't able to fix my machine in the first instance, and figure out this problem in the second. If anyone is having a problem with their Emax, I would not hesitate in recommending Jammie.

All the best!

The 50B lights up and it passes the 'formatting HD', 'loading bank "untitled 1 ", and gets as far as 'saving software' when it gets to the HD error screen and that's it.

If this doesn't work, I have to say I am totally lost.

Re: PCD-50b drive in Emax

2011-12-18 by mcnik_k

I was aware of the LUNs issue, it did cross my mind to do a hardware hack to make the Compact Flash slot work as LUN0 on the PCD-50b. AFAIAA the CF wiring is just a subset of the PCMCIA wiring.

I don't suppose anyone has had one of these to bits to have a look?

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
