DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

2014-06-16 by Jerome St-Pierre

Hi all,

I recently acquired a CZ-1 and I was just going through The Easy CZ Book
that was posted in the group files section. This book is indeed easy to
follow but there is still a detail that keeping me puzzled on the patch
sheets...

I don't understand why there is 4 DCO wave combinations for each patch
where it's only possible to enter 2 DCO wave combinations by tone. It
indicates the rate and level of the 8 envelope points for both DCO, DCW
and DCA, but it also indicates 4 DCO wave combinations on the right side
as for instance on "Sound 2 Violin 1":

WAVE
1:1
2:0

and then for the second oscillator:

WAVE
1:2
2:5

Since there is only 2 wave forms by DCO, how are we suppose to set those
4 oscillators?

I guess I must be missing a something dumb but this is now really
leaving me scratching my head...

Cheers & have a nice one,

RE: [CZsynth] DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

Hello Jérôme:

I am not sure to have understood your question, but I will try to explain it according to the reference manual (pag.17)

As you say, there are 2 DCO (DCO1 and DCO2), that can be adjusted with their envelopes (as far as you select line 1+2)

For each DCO, you can set the waveform. And here is where you can choose between 8 SIMPLE waveforms, let`s say (1:1, 2:0), or also a COMBINATION of 2 waveforms (1:2, 2:5) for instance.

The wave is combined in a new wave that can sound very different of the original ones.

So you have really more than the basic 8 waveforms: you have 33 combinations. It should be 8X8=64, but (1:1, 2:1) is equivalent to (1:1, 2:0), and the last 3 types of resonant waves cannot be combined between them.

I insist on taking a look at pag.17 of the manual, where DCO and waveforms are explained.

Au revoir.

Jérôme,

Once you've set up an individual patch (using 1 or 2 DCOs), you can then use 2 different patches together in Tone Mix mode (but at reduced polyphony).

In Operation Memory mode, you can mix up to 8 patches (or split up 8-note polyphony as desired, e.g. ch1=4 notes, ch2=2 notes, ch3=1 note, ch4=1 note).

See Part 2 and Part 4 respectively in the CZ-1 manual.

Regards,
JPS

Hello Alfons & JPS,

I am very glad to see this group is still active!

Thank you for your answer Alfons but I have already read the DCO section of the owner manual (page 24 in English version) and I understand perfectly we can combine 2 different wave forms for each DCO.

But in the Easy CZ Book that contains many patch sheets, 2 wave forms combinations are indicated by DCO. For instance, on the first patch "Parrot Voice" it indicates wave 1:4 and 2:0 for the first DCO and then 1:5 and 2:0 for the second DCO.

As you mentionned JPS, I also thought those patches were meant to be programmed in Tone Mix mode, but there is only envelope settings for both DCO, DCW and DCA, for a total of 6 envelopes. So it doesn't seem like those patches are meant to be programmed in Tone Mix mode.

You both confirmed what I already thought, but I still don't understand why the patch sheets in the book are indicating 4 wave forms by DCO for a total of 8 wave forms selection by tone. If someone already tried to program any Easy CZ book patches, I would also be curious to know why left pointing arrows like '<-' are also sometimes indicated in the envolopes settings. I guess the arrows are pointing on the Sustain points on the envelope but this is not totally clear to me...

Thanks & have a nice one,

Jérôme

I have been following this thread and confess I am as confused as Jerome and I thought I understood CZ programming.
My understanding was that there were 2 waveforms per DCO. I presume that the colon is separating the 1st and second waveform,so what are the second pair of numbers?
I am intrigued by the 'combination' waveform - how on earth does one do that?

RE: [CZsynth] DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

2014-06-17 by Jérôme

Hello Lee,

I think we clearly can't set more than 2 waveforms by DCO but my confusion comes from a CZ patch book where 4 waveforms are indicated by DCO.

As JPS mentionned, it is possible to use a total of 8 waveforms in the Tone Mix mode but the patch book I am refering to doesn't seem to give parameters for Tone Mix mode patches as there is only 6 envelopes parameters by patch.

I am sorry to confuse people with my silly question but my question is more related on how to interpret the Easy CZ Book patch parameters...

Thanks & have a nice one,

Jérôme

Re: [CZsynth] DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

2014-06-17 by Daniel Forró

I think that 1 means Wave Nr. 1, and 2 is Wave Nr. 2. And following the colon is that number of selected wave from 8 possible waves.

Why would be the first number in the first pair of numbers always 1, and the first number of the second pair always 2? All your examples are like this.

Maybe it's so simple.

Hello Alfons & JPS,

Jérôme

I have checked the book now, and it's exactly as I have explained my suspicion in my previous message.

Look at it carefully - all patch lists have always as first number on the first line 1, and the first number on the second line 2.

It's nonsensical to suppose that all sounds have ALWAYS a wave number 1 as first one from the two. And to suppose that there's another nonsensical combination of two waves where the first one is ALWAYS a wave number 2.

So once more my explanation: those numbers 1 and 2 at left before the colon are just sequential number of wave (first or second), and the second number (after the colon) is the actual number of the wave. So each DCO has only two waveforms, not four.

So easy is Easy Book format.

All the best!

Hello Daniel,

This is very embarassing but I just checked a douzen of patches in that book and they all follow this scheme! For instance 1:1 and 2:3 only means to set the first wave form to 1 and the second to 3.

I knew I was missing something dumb but can't believe I got stuck on something that was so obvious...

Thanks a million!

Hello Daniel,

Now that you looked at the patches parameters, did you notice the right pointing arrows in the envolopes settings of some patches? Are these arrows meant to point on the envelopes sustain points?

Thanks again!

Yes, it's explained on the page 17 down, did you read it, or not?

Hello Daniel,

Of course I read the manual and the Easy CZ Book introduction or else I wouldn't be here asking questions yet.

I just looked again on page 17 of the Easy CZ Book as you mentionned and I didn't find any explanation for the meaning of the arrows in the envelopes parameters.

Anyhow, it must stand for the sustain points or else I don't see what else it could indicate...

Hi, Jérôme,

then maybe you have some other copy or I don't know.

In my copy I see clearly the following text on the page 17, line 7 from bottom:

(Note. Any sustain steps in the sound charts of this book will be indicated by a little arrow, shown pointing at the level value for that step.)

After you have asked this, I was sure you are right concerning the fact it's an indication for the step where was set sustain point. But i wanted the confirmation, so I've just go through the text from beginning, hoping that there must be some explanation for the arrow, and found this on the page 17.

BTW, my first message just came... Yahoo does only chaos in messages not to send them in the proper order in which they were sent...

I suppose a term "combination" waveform here means just mix of two waveforms. Of course by the mixing of two waveforms we have new waveform in a result.

Some more info about waveforms can be found here:

I like those pages, it's interesting and not so common view to PD synthesis.

Hi Daniel,

Yes it seems like we don't have the same copy as I don't see this note on page 17.

Would you mind to send me your copy on my personal address?

Thanks again,

Re: [CZsynth] DCO settings in "The Easy CZ Book"

Nice resource; thanks for posting the link.

I must confess, I haven't created CZ sounds in decades, but it seems clear from the sound sheet form in The Easy CZ Book, the "Wave" section next to the DCO settings refers to the two components of the wave form ("combination") for each DCO.

I used to send "bogus" patch data to the CZ (randomly tweaked sysex data) to see what patches I could create that were not available from the front panel; so its nice to see the internal parameters laid out like that.

Good question and good answer!!
