Hi Kevin:
I don't know whether it's the right answer in your case but for me, the most
common cause of NOT getting a paper choice listed for which I KNOW I have
loaded a profile is not having the right ink in the machine.
If I have the PK black ink loaded, matte papers will not show up. When I
load the matte black (MK) ink, all the matte papers (including Velvet) show
up.
Hope this helps...
Bert

Thanks for the reply Gary.

And, yes, I realize that I've got a lot of learning to do yet.

When I started BO printing with my 1280 I learned by reading
Clayton's website, and discussing matters via E-mail with Jim Arnold
and others. I also learned by trial and error and referencing other
written materials.

However, if I can get a quick reply from someone else that already
knows the answer, I'll take it any day over hammering through pages
of written literature (much of which leaves out important details),
or the trial and error of running the same test print 50 times. I
have 3 young kids and not a whole lot of time! And let's face it,
different people learn in different ways. Some people have an
aptitude for tinkering and learning on their own, while others learn
better through collaboration and bouncing ideas and questions off one
another.even simple, seemingly stupid questions.

Any way, do you have any idea as to why I can not choose "Velvet Fine
Art Paper" in my Print Setup? I'm quite sure that I downloaded and
installed the Fine Art Papers Matte ICC profiles from here:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/EditorialAnnouncement.jsp?
cookies=no&oid=59082651

But maybe I need to find these somewhere else and move them to
another folder so they show up in the Epson Driver? I'm not sure.

By the way, I browsed your Pbase images and was very impressed. You
certainly seem to be dedicated to your B&W.

Regards,

Kevin

Well Bert, thanks for trying. I have the Matte Black in machine and I
only use matte/art papers. Will not be using Photo Black.

Anyone else have any ideas why "Velvet Fine Art Paper" is not
selectable in the 2400 driver print settings?

Velvet Fine Art Still Not Selectable.

2006-08-11 by Kevin

I tried #1 and it did not seem to work. i have tried different print settings and it does not
work.

I'm not sure just what you mean w/ #2? There is a top front lid that folds down, but is this
actually a path for paper? Then there is the bottom lid that automatically pops out when
you push it. I assume this to be the right tray where the print finishes.

Anyway, Velvet Fine Art Paper is still not selectable along with Water Color and
UltraSmooth Fine Art.

A true mystery to me and I'm sure I'd like to use the Water Color w/ matte black in the
future, too.

Kevin:

I don't know why you can't choose VFA. I don't use any profiles. In
Photoshop in the print with preview screen I use "let printer determine
colors" and then control the printing with the Advanced B/W driver. You are
already using matte black. That should make all of the matte papers
available. You may have to contact Epson on this one.

The thicker papers can not be loaded via the tray....thus the fine art paper media settings will
be grayed out if "tray" is selected in the Epson driver.

I don't have the 2400 (I have the 4800)...is there a manual feed selection in the Epson driver?

Re: Velvet Fine Art Still Not Selectable.

2006-08-11 by Roy Harrington

The reason you don't see Velvet paper available is that Epson considers this too
heavy a paper to feed through the standard sheet feeder. You must use the other
slot in the back which they call "Manual Roll". Immediate above the Media selection
pulldown there's a Page Setup selection -- change this to Manual Roll and the Media
selection will now allow Velvet and the others.

I use a Mac:

You shut the regular paper loader and then open the rear paper loader. Also, I forgot to
mention that you have to set up the "page set up" dialogue box as follows:

A; Format: Stlylus Photo 2400
B.  Paper Size;  Using Super B (13 x 19) as an example;
     select "Super B (13 x 19) >scroll down to Super B (13 x 19) manual - roll
     {Note; it has to be set to manual - roll}

C. on the Print Box; check to make sure thar "Page Setup" shows "manual - roll"
D. Select VFA or any paper that was previously greyed out.

I think that is about it.  I went through the same problems;

When you insert the paper make sure that you push it down until it stops. With me, the
VFA 13 x 19 paper works most of the time. But some times, I have to keep shoving the
paper down several times for it to catch properly. But do as Clayton Jones, suggests, put a
slight curl on the leading edge to help the paper along.

Velvet Mystery Solved...I think.

2006-08-11 by Kevin

In the manual there is a section on Loading Special Paper in the Single Sheet Guide.

It talks about selecting "Manual-Roll" and sure enough, you have to choose this option in
the Page Setup "Paper Size". For example, US Letter has an arrow that lets you further
specify paper where you would choose "US Letter, Manual-Roll".

After I pick this I can choose Velvet from the Print Setup menu. But it warns you to load
paper in the rear manual slot.

And the Manual Roll option is not available for all paper sizes, including the 4.25x5.5
special paper size I created for proofs and testing.

Can anyone tell me how easy/tough it is to use this manual Single Sheet Guide? I have very
little space behind my printer. Maybe another 5 or 6 inches. It's housed in a cabinet and I
just can't see myself bending over to get behind the machine too often.

Martin

I've discovered this just now. Please see my recent post about my conerns about using the
Single Sheet Guide and Manual-Roll.

Anyh feedback you can offer would be appreciated.

Also, it was my intent to use the following papers for nearly all of my projects:

Red River Aurora Art (8.5x11 - 13x19) and Epson Enhanced Matte (8.5x11 - 13x19).

Do you see a problem with sending any of the above papers through the regular paper
loader (with the understanding that I will not be able to choose from Velvet paper)?

Thanks for your detailed response below.

I have my printer on top of a desk, with very little space (about 4 inches) behind the printer.
But I have more than suficient space above the printer. Using the "paper guide," for the 13 x
19 paper, I have had only the problems that I described in my previous post.

However, I have had a heck of a time using letter size paper. Some how it seems to cause the
printer to jam and I have to insert the paper (HRag) over and over again, until it catches.

I believe, Clayton uses smaller sizes paper for his testing. Maybe he can respond to your
question on using smaller size papers with the "manual - roll" setting."

This sounds real strange. Maybe it's different on a Mac. I just hit
Ctrl-P and up pops the printer window. I select the 2400, then the
Properties button and up pops the driver window. On the Main tab is
the paper list and everything is available.

>But it warns you to load paper in the rear manual slot.

That happens to me as well, but then I click OK and go back to the
picklist and reselect "Sheet" and go ahead and use the top feeder, for
everything from 1/4 sheets to 13x19. Even real thick papers. They
usually require a little nudge to get it started. Also I bend a small
bit of curl to the leading edge. Once you get the knack you can make
it take anything. The rear feeder is quite strange and finicky and I
never use it.

If you save the settings you can just pick your custom settings from
the list and you won't get the feeder warning (this is described in
article #9).

Regards,
Clayton

Re: Velvet Mystery Solved...I think.

Thanks for responding Clayton.

I'm not sure what you mean about going back to the picklist?

Here is as far as I get (notice it shows Manual - Roll):
http://www.pbase.com/vinke/image/65010084

With Manual Roll selected I can now choose Velvet. However, I can not go back to Page
Setup to choose Standard (the only other choice). If I do so it resets all the print settings.

If I try to print just as my sample above w/ Manual Roll selected and through the
traditional top feeder I get an error and the print job is supended.

So, Martin...You use a Mac

2006-08-12 by Kevin

Is it your understanding and experience that Mac users can not select and use Velvet Fine
Art paper setting without using the Single Sheet Guide and Manual - Roll settings
together?

That's certainly how it appears to me with my limited knowledge of the 2400. When I tried
to print through the top paper path with the Velvet/Manual Roll settings the print job
aborted and I got the flashing red error light.

Clayton and Gary Brown are able to work around these settings on a PC and still print
through the top paper path w/ Velvet paper.

That is my understanding. I have not seen any other way. But, I am not a computer person, I
just seem to stumble around with photoShop CS and my Espson 2400.
