Wasting paper on a roll

Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-01 by jurajlipscher

Hallo
I am on WIN XP, QTR 2.5.2.0 and I am printing on a 4800 using Piezo K7
inks from a 13" roll. My problem is the waste of paper with each
print. The 4800 first positions the roll about 4,9 inch from the
correct starting point of the print. Using the EPSON driver and
Photoshop 'Print with Preview' causes the printer to pull in the roll
4,9 inch inwards before starting to print, so that the print comes out
with correct margins.

Now using QTR the printer does not pull the roll inwards at all and I
lose 4,9 inch of paper with each print. (With Piezo K7 inks I cannot
use the Epson driver/Photoshop workflow)

Does anyone know of any workaround or could anyone point me in the
right direction?

Juraj

I'll take a look at the problem with my set up when I get back to the studio
next week if nobody speaks up. My guess would be to look at the default
setting in the Printer driver through Windows/ Start/ Printers and Faxes/
Epson 4800 Properties and see if you have it set up for cut roll.

The main thing to check is that the selection on the printer itself agrees
with the selection in QTRgui. They both should say Roll Paper for it
to work correctly.

Will this be the same issue when I use roll paper on
my 2400? I'll make sure both are set to roll
paper....

Well the R2400 doesn't have a front panel to select roll paper feed.
But it is also important that the selection in QTRgui matches where you put
the
paper i.e. if you put paper in the manual slot in back you must select the
corresponding Manual Roll selection in QTRgui; and if you have roll paper
in a printer that you select a roll paper selection in QTRgui.

I take my roll down to Kinkos (they all have large 36" + paper cutters) and
I spend an hour or so cutting stock for all the sizes that I commonly use.

Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-02 by jurajlipscher

Hallo everybody

I have tried the following remedies:

1. To select the roll feed with automatic cutter on in the printer
display and in QTR.
2. To select the roll feed with automatic cutter on in the WINDOWS ->
System -> Printers ->4800 -> Properties as the standard setting and
also in QTR.
3. I tried to transport the paper on the roll backwards using the
appropriate button on the printer display. I was able to transoprt the
paper backwards but it was pulled out again after the "print" command
has been given.

Alas none of these brought any improvement and I am still loosing the
same amount of paper.

Any new ideas anybody?

Thank you
Juraj

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-02 by Roy Harrington

Hi Juraj,
(1) should be all that is necessary.

Are you using custom page sizes? Could you have the width & length
reversed?
Width is across the paper as it comes out of the printer (direction of ink
head travel).
Length is along the feed direction.
Are you doing Landscape (rotates image) or Portrait?
Another possibility is if a paper size is too small it reverts to default
which is Letter.
The minimum size is 7x7inches on the 4800 I'm pretty sure.

Hi Roy

Thank you for your fast responses!! I am printing on a 13" roll in
portrait orientation. My paper size is custom: width = 13" (the whole
width of the roll) and length = 9,45". So as far as I can see I am not
using too small a paper size and the orientation is correct too.

I also tried to use the "banner roll" setting instead of "roll" with
the option "save paper" turned on (in the WINDOWS settings for the
4800 printer) to no avail.

Juraj, There have been posts on other list mentioning a problem with the CS3
upgrade that is causing a problem with roll paper. I am headed in to the
studio shortly and will try your issues out and see what happens. I run a
4800 and can use QTR to drive an image, I also have CS3.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

Juraj, I just printed an image with my 4800 with roll cutter on. It drew the
paper back in just like it should both with CS3 direct and through QTR. I
used a 17" roll. The paper size was custom 17x14 as a portrait and printed
that way. I did have a "to fit" image box checked. You have the borderless
check box ticked in the properties for the Epson driver? As you are using a
13" wide print on a 13" wide paper.

Hi Juraj,
It sure sounds like you are doing the right thing.
I think the best thing is to get some specific details.

1) Get a screen capture of the QTRgui page right before printing.
2) Print your image.
3) Quit out of QTRgui.
4) Look under \Documents and Settings\yourname\Application Data\QuadToneRIP
there should be two files: QTRgui.ini and QTRlog.txt

Email me the screen capture, the two files QTRgui.ini and QTRlog.txt, and
what
the result on the paper looks like. I.e the size of paper and the margins
you got
from the point of view of the image, top, bottom, left and right.

Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-04 by jurajlipscher

Eric, thanks a lot for your help! I have CS 1 so there is no question
of CS 3 issues. My paper size (13 x 9.5") is set to the full width of
the 13" roll but my print is smaller than the roll dimensions (print
dimension = approx. 7 x 8") or in other words I do not print
borderless and do not have the "borderless" box checked in the driver
settings. As my print is smaller than the paper size I cannot have the
"to fit" box checked in QTR
I have just emailed Roy all the data he requested from me and hope
that the problem is going to be resolved - even more so seeing that
you do not experience any problems in this direction with the same
printer.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-04 by Roy Harrington

Hi Juraj,

I got your data -- all exactly correct. It all confirms that you are doing
what I expected.

Eric reports that he's not had trouble with his 4800 and I have a 4000 which
is very similar and
not been a problem. The only unusual thing I see in your case is the 13inch
paper and I
imagine that this may be rarely used. This being the problem seems like a
long shot but
you never know.

I think you can work around this by making your paper size 17x9.5 instead of
13x9.5.
Naturally you have to adjust the margins because of this and be sure not to
print off the
paper. The printer may also do a paper size check. If you get a error on
the printer panel
for this you can disable the check. On the 4000 its under Menu > Printer
Setup > Paper Size Check.
It's probably similar Just set it to OFF.

In your first post you mentioned that the printer is not pulling in the roll
before printing. This is
another good observation. Continue to watch that in the tests.

Thanks,
Roy

Re: Wasting paper on a roll

Hi Roy

I have done the test with paper size set to 17" but again to no avail.
I have also noticed that the printer is first pulling the paper back
in as it should and then it pushes it out again (as it shouldn't).

best regards & thanks

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-04 by E Neilsen

Unfortunately I have CS1 at home where only my 7000 resides. I don't have
any 13" rolls either so I can't try that either unless I just tell it that I
have 13" when I really have 17". That may not really help.

What dpi is your file? 360? And is this only happening with one image or any
image sized to 7x8? However it really sounds more like a setting issue with
the printer. When I have the cutter OFF, there will be extra paper that
stays unprinted at the beginning of the roll. If I want to print close to
the edge, I put it in with the cutter set to ON, and then before printing on
canvas for example, I turn it off before sending the data to be printed.
Works fine.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

I've done essentially the same thing on my 4000 and can't duplicate a
problem.

Eric's idea about cutter ON/OFF on the printer may have merit. Do you use
both cutter ON & OFF? Are you changing the setting of this on the printer
panel?
Also are you using the Epson driver immediately prior to QTR?

Have you done any other printing? Sheet feeding? Other paper sizes?
Does this always happen?

Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-05 by jurajlipscher

Dear Roy

I have been printing with ABW/EPSON Driver for 2 years and I did not
have this problem. Recently I have installed K7 Piezo inks and QTR and
the problem started. Since the ink change I have used the same paper
size, the same print size and I did not use the EPSON driver at all.
And yes this happens every time.

I have not used the cutter off setting yet, this will be my next test.

Thanks again
Juraj

Hi Juraj,

The strange thing is that this is the only report I know of like this.
I think you've got to try some different things. Try the Epson driver
again.
Try the sheet feeder. Try different paper sizes -- standard and custom.
Who knows, maybe there's a hardware malfunction like a paper sensor.

To narrow down the problem we need to find a scenario that works and one
that fails and get it down to one change. Right now there's too many
changes
to know what caused it.

Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-05 by jurajlipscher

Hi Eric

My files are 360 dpi and it happens with all images printed on the
roll but not with images printed on a sheet. I have the cutter on all
the time and the only thing I can think of trying would be to print
with the cutter off. But according to your experience this would make
matters worse rather than better.

I will report any hopefully positive results as soon as I know something.

RE: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Wasting paper on a roll

2007-12-05 by E Neilsen

If your images are only 7x8 and they are printing on a 13x9 paper, why not
change to a 12.5x 8.5 paper size and see if that helps. Or try this load
the roll as a sheet, then change to roll with cutter on after the sheet is
in. I am with Roy here in that it sounds like a hardware issue.

Good luck

Juraj
