Losing profiles - help please

Losing profiles - help please

2009-04-10 by Alan Steinbrugge

I'm losing all the profiles made with my spyder3studio, both monitor and
printer profiles. No other profiles are erased. I am using the latest
versions of the programs. I would like to do a clean reinstall. What
else should I do other than remove the programs via windows add/remove?
any directories I should delete? files in odd places? registry edits?
(don't really want to go there though).

I'm running Vista 64 with 8gb.

Can you be a bit more specific. Are the profiles added to the correct
folder, than later disappear? Or is it some other symptom? If its
disappearing profiles, thats an OS issue, not a Datacolor issue...

thanks for the quick response, sorry about the short message. I had to run off as I will here again. This time I'll be gone from the machine with the problem for for several hours and I'm hoping to do the reinstall late this afternoon or this evening.

this has happened twice before, both times I did a reinstall over an exesiting install. the last it happened was between 1 to 2 weeks ago. I did check then and the profiles were in The printer profile (I'd only redone 1) was found by other programs before the problem this morning. I checked after making the new monitor profiles (I use 2 monitors) and the 1 new printer profile, the profiles were in:
C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color.

When i booted up this morning my computer could not find the monitor profiles. I then checked and could not find the monitor prifiles and the 1 printer profile I'd made. I have used the printer profile a few times since it was made. there are other printer profiles that were not made by spyder3print that are still in the directory.

It is possible this problem is not with your software, but it seems like the best place to start.

I've got to leave this machine for several hours, until about 3-5 pm pacific time but i'll likley be able to check this forum in the next 2-3 hours if you've got any other questions that don't require me to look at problem machine.

What I want to do is the cleanest possible reinstall of both programs to see if this fixes the issue.

But our software does not delete profiles from the profile folder. So
I'd start by checking permissions, looking at date issues (the
profiles that disappear or become invisible are newer than the ones
that don't as well as being Datacolor profiles, so you may be drawing
the wrong conclusion), cleaning the registry, and other OS related
things.

I can't imagine that Vista 64 is *that* different (maybe...but I doubt it) from other Windows OS's to indiscriminately delete files all by itself...

Some suggestions:

1. When you create a profile--either monitor or print--copy it/them to another folder someplace so that you have a backup so if the profile(s) disappear, you can copy them back to C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color

2. If Vista 64 is like other Windows OS's, do you have Explorer set to show Hidden/System files--if not, make sure that the system is set to show those files. Monitor and print profiles should not be Hidden/System files but maybe something flagged them as that.

3. Have you run both a spyware and antivirus scans? I've not heard of spyware or viruses deleting profile files but hey...you never know...

4. Check the Recycle bin to see if your profiles are there...

Hope that helps...

I don't think there is a problem with your software deleting profiles.
If there was I'd think there would be a lot of messages in this forum
about it. What I'm wondering is if my installation is in someway corupt
and in someway causing my problems possibly in conjuction with something
else on my machine. What I'm looking for is how I can do the cleanest
possible reinstall.

I have wondered if this might be related to some Nikon software I've
recently upgraded, there stuff is buggy. But I find this unlikley. I
thought a clean reinstall of the colorvision software would be the
easist way to start and the most likley spot I could get some help.

I looked at permissions for the color folder. But I don't know just what
I'd actually be looking for there.

One oddity i found in spyder3elite when I open the software update in the help menu. It tells me i have the newest version; the installed version is 3.0.7; the latest version is 3.0.4. Should the latest version be a lower version than the installed version?

Re: Losing profiles - help please

2009-04-11 by Alan Steinbrugge

Mr. Tobie,

I am very troubled by this response. While I don't think the problem is your software, but I've have not really been given a better idea. The profiles are only the ones made by colorvison software that are being deleted. For the record I have checked my recycle bin, I've checked if the files have been hidden, I've scanned my computer for viruses etc.
I'm wondering if there is something corrupted on my computer, perhaps associated with the colorvision programs. All I'm asking is how I can remove all aspects of the colorvision software before I reinstall it. This seems like a logical thing to try, colorvision produced profiles only being deleted so why not reinstall the software. I don't think I've gotten a better idea from anyone.
Your idea of the modify dates and deleting files newer than some point is interesting but I not sure all newer profiles were deleted. I'm sorry but I just don't know. All I'm sure of is that all colorvision produced profiles were deleted when I booted up this morning.
If my original question had been answered, I'd have done the reinstall and would be moving on. Either the problem would be fixed or I'd be looking for some other answer. As it stand now, it appears we've wasted both your and my time; and I'm still asking the same question. Besides running windows delete programs what else should I do to remove colorvision programs before reinstalling them?
BTW spyder3 print does have the chart reading I made still recorded in the program so I remade the printer profile I'd made since the last install (over a previous install).
Also you must admit that it is a but when spyder3elite shows the installed version to be 3.0.7 but the latest version to be 3.0.4. Shouldn't the latest version be shown as 3.0.7?

Alan

you start a support ticket at our website if you still want detailed

Alan,

You don't have to run any Windows delete programs.

All you need to do to Uninstall our software is to go
to the Start menu, find the Datacolor program item, and
then run the Uninstall for each Spyder application that
you'll find there. It's as simple as that.

This will Uninstall everything that the installer for
a given application put in place on your system. (The
applications themselves and supporting files).

It will -not- uninstall any files that you've created
by running the applications.

For Spyder3Print, specifically: any measurement files
that you've created will remain in place. (This is useful,
so that if you Uninstall an older version and then install
a newer one, all of your previous measurement files will
show up in the new software).

As far as actual profiles that you've built (which will
reside in the "spool" folder on your Windows system): we
create and write those files, and that is all. We don't
do anything to remove them; our uninstallers won't remove
them; and the only way you can delete or change them is
to do this manually, or to overwrite them with new profiles
you build (if you use the same names, in which case, you'll
be warned on overwriting).

This is the first time, on any system, that I've heard
of disappearing profiles. There's nothing about our
software that would do this; I wish I could offer suggestions.
However these profiles are being deleted, it doesn't have
anything to do with us.
