EXS24 in live theater application

EXS24 in live theater application

2004-07-26 by dphil321

I may be building a system for use in a theater production, lots of
orchestral samples played live to augment the orchestral
players.

I've used the I/O plug in trick, and it works, but I've found it a bit
unstable, and setting up any kind of splits or layers is fairly
agonizing.

Anyone know if any of this kind of functionality can be expected in
Logic 7, and when this might show up?

I can't stand even the thought of gigasampler. Come on emagic,
help us live people out!!

I've been involved with such uses for many years, now.

I don't think the I/O trick works in Mac OS X. I tried it and saw no
difference.

Another weird thing about processor load is that Logic's CPU meters for my
dual G4 show uneven use. That's typical of Mac OS 9 behavior -- but I'm in
OS X! it appears that logic would have some way to go before it fully
distributes the load across two processors BUT OS X's Activity monitor when
running at the same time shows a more even use of the two CPUs! I don't
understand where the discrepancy lies. Sure, there may be some additional
load that OS X itself can distribute for running ITSELF, but the difference
was pretty major. Check out the screenshot I took:

http://members.rogers.com/dropzone/LogicLoad.jpg

That's with dual 1.3GHz G4, 2GB RAM, 64 audio instruments. Logic is in play
during a fairly busy section.

Maybe it's Core Audio chugging away on the System side?? But, Activity
Monitor shows LOGIC at 112.3% CPU usage. So, there is still this discrepancy
between logic's CPU meter and Activity Monitor's CPU meter :-/

Having said ALL that, your post really didn't have a point, other than the
inference of processor load. If you're having problems with processor load,
make sure your audio instruments' polyphony is reduced as low as possible.

I just got my N.I. Komplete 2 package containing Kontakt and it's hard to
believe how much it beats the EXS hands down when it comes to anything such
as live performing.
Want a layer? Easy, just drag the second intrument into the rack.
Want two sounds to play on two different MIDI channels? Easy, just drag
again and change the MIDI channel.
Want to save your instrument with the required amount of EQ/Reverb/Delay to
suit the performance? Again, you may have guessed: Easy, just dial in the
effects in Kontakt.
Need some complete performance patches? Load a multi.
And so on.
And you don't need to have Logic in play mode either.
Plus, you could also use the standalone which might raise stability (even if
I don't experience stability issues yet).

The EXS is still great for efficiency, stability and easy building of easy
patches (the automap feature is just great), but if I had to perform some
live stuff I'd go for something else

Seriously, I'm not up to some EXS slagging, but it's simply not up to date
anymore, especially for such things.

Sascha

Well, this is pretty much exactly it, what I am looking for. I certainly
hope it's time for an overhaul to exs. Darcy

EXS WISH! (was: EXS24 in live theater application)

2004-07-26 by Mac Duff

The discussion about wishing for features more amenable to live use has
prompted me to express my wish that the audio instrument main windows WERE
NOT FLOATING WINDOWS!!!!

I got dual monitors, partially for this reason, and yet it is STILL a pain
in the arse!

I think this isn't possible, but you can get close:
When you select a new arrange track containing an exs instrument,
double-click (or cmd-opt-double-click - thanks for that tip!) the exs
plug-in in the channel strip at the bottom of the arrange window
parameters. Provided that your "link" button is engaged, your exs
window will update to the newly selected exs instrument. I think the
extra click is required because, as has been remarked, the exs is a
plug-in, and this is the way that plug-ins link.

BTW I programmed cmd-shift-W to close floating windows.

Yeah. Close, but no cigar :-( This still creates redundant AI interfaces.
Now that more of us know the cmd-opt-double-click (thanks indeed to Matt
Jones, with an assist by Hans :-) ), I can easily close the AI window with
a normal command -- IF the AI window is topmost. THEN, one can select
another track and use the cmd-opt-double-click to open the AI's UI.

It's all still kludgy. Not as fluid as how "normal" windows in Logic react.
I still say it's time for real-time linking for AI UIs.

Maybe you're right.
But then, even on OSX 10.3 opening plugin UIs seems to be quite graphically
demanding (seems to be a Logic issue).
I don't mean to slag Macs, but on PCs it's 10 times faster... what I'm
really wondering about though is, everything graphic related under OSX now
seems to be pretty much "snappy", just Logic isn't, at least a large part of
it (namely UI opening and screenset switching).
So, IMO Emagic should first see whether they could get this fixed. Otherwise
the sluggish behaviour when opening "catched" UI windows might just drive
you mad after a while.

Sascha

Well, it can't be any slower (or laborious) than closing a window
completely, and then opening up another one. Like, if you're going from one
EXS instrument to another EXS instrument, only the patch values need to be
changed. If you go from EXS to EVB3, then of course there would be more
redrawing required -- no more than what we experience today, I'd say.

But, the "slapped-on" nature of plug-in UIs is not exclusive to Emagic. They
were like this since Day One for everybody. Maybe with OS X.4 (aka 'Tiger")
coming, what with its killer system-level enhancements called Core Video and
Core Graghics, MAYBE it is time for Emagic to bite the bullet and recode
Logic in Cocoa. Won't the app run better and have the potential of better
design (both functional and esthetical) if they FINALLY buried all that
converted M<ac OS Classic code? Maybe Logic would then take better advantage
of dual processors -- or those rumored "dual core" G5 processors?
http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1627893,00.asp

Who knows? With all of this coming on the horizon, maybe Logic Pro 7 is
being completely revised in Cocoa for Tiger?? Tiger will be 64 bit, and as
Apple owns Emagic, they better come out with a 64 bit version of Logic
either simultaneously or DAMNED SOON after Tiger hits the streets. Has there
been any rumor as to Logic's future anyway??

WHOA! I'm an arse. (was: EXS WISH)

2004-07-27 by Mac Duff

Er... I'm sure I tried this, yesterday when it was suggested and it didn't
work. NOW it is working, however. That is the link button in the
Cmmnd-Opt-Dbl-Click will work if you double-click on an instrument's strip!

Thank Heavens!

So now, I have the one window that will show any instrument I double-click
on. It aint a single-click, but I can easily live with it. It even changes
to the EVB3 or whatever if you double-click on a track strip with a
different instrument instantiated! Sweet! :-)

Thanks guys! This shortens my bitch list about the audio instruments a
bunch! But, not all, however.
