Who Still Uses A CZ?

Who Still Uses A CZ?

2009-05-07 by Gary

The CZ101 was the first MIDI device I ever bought. I still have it but I haven't even turned it on for years. Anyone still actively using it? Are there any CZ VST plugins? If so, do they accept CZ101 patches?

I wrote the DOS-based CZEdit back in 1988 as an excersize to learn Turbo Pascal. It's amusing to still be able to find a copies of czedit33.zip floating around on the internet. I guess nothing ever dies in cyberspace...

There are groups that are linked to the Casio CZ, I dont know if this link will work http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/CZsynth/files/VZ%20-%20DOCs/ you may need membership (free) they are linked to the VZ and FZ groupsthere is another one but I cant find it at the moment they are probably very interested in the CZEdit and patches, I use the VZ 8m and this site is connected but I cant find the exact page http://www.sallyandsteve.dsl.pipex.com/casio/software.htm the CZ gets mentioned in the chat page, It is also mentioned in Vintage Synth site pages CZ is still a popular synth Phil

I use both the VZ10M and the CZ101, as well as a motley crew of synthesis types, including some analog (Matrix6r) and analog modelling(MicroKorg) synths. I know the current craze is to go to software synths, but there's just something lacking there for me. Heck, I still have my Ensoniq Mirage rackmount I use on occasion. And as I regularly cruise Ebay, I see the Casio 80's synths are still being snapped up when offered and not for nickels and dimes, considering their 'vintage.'

Regarding CZ VST patches/plug-ins, I would imagine a thorough Internet search would be in order. It seems vintage analog synths are king of the heap for a lot of those. ---Charles J

I used a CZ101. I have a CZ1000 now in LA.

As a matter of fact, I used 2 of them along with 2 Indus Midi DJ¹s in an all
computer controlled show in the 80¹s. It was a Midwest region group called:
The Bushwackers.

Great machine!

Your CZEdit was cool too!
Stan

BTW you will have to change the internal battery most likely if it hasn¹t
been changed.

Re: Who Still Uses A CZ?

What a strange question to ask. I can't imagine why anyone would sign up to the CZsynth list if they didn't use a CZ synth. The clue is in the name.

Just in case you think I'm being a little disingenuous (not to mention rude), I should mention that I've recently renewed my 20 or so year fascination with these magnificent noise makers. Back in the day I started out with a CZ1000 and then moved on to a CZ3000. I foolishly parted with that about 5 years ago and have regretted it ever since. Just lately I had been holding out for a reasonably priced CZ1 but, growing impatient, I settled for a very cheap CZ5000 and am now just getting to grips with its built in sequencer. It adds a nice touch to the otherwise CZ3000 spec and I'm not really missing the CZ1's keyboard sensitivity. Some synths just aren't necessarily designed to rely on that kind of feature.

Anyway, despite dissing the question, I've gone on to answer it. So it must have been worth asking.
Cheers,
Alan

Hi, Gary. Do you have a copy of czedit33.zip to upload to files? How about the source code? I wanted to see if it would work on an XP machine, but couldn't find it any where. And if it doesn't work under XP, would you be willing to recompile the code to run in a DOS-window on Windows? (If not, I'd be willing to give it a try.) --Steve

Re: Who Still Uses A CZ?

2009-05-07 by kungfugirlsclub

I'll go ahead and bite the bullet on this, as I've been doing CZ for less than a year.

I'm a collector/composer of electronic music, and I run everything with outboard gear. I use an outdated Mac (a 9600) with outdated software (Opcode Studio Vision.)

I used to be in a band, and in that time period, we acquired a lot of gear, and then went our separate ways.

One of my partners got married, had kids (you know this story) and had no real use for his CZ101 and 1000.

He "lent" me both, and the CZ101 is DOA with a power supply issue, the 1000 works fine.

I read a lot of old magazines and am a huge fan of Vince Clarke's and his work in Erasure. Naturally I was wanting to make a lot of the cool sounds that I keep seeing on YouTube and such.

My friend is also looking to find the cartridges for the CZ, as I have trouble saving sounds to internal memory.

He has them somewhere.

In the meantime, I'm aware that there are some great patch editors out there, but I can't find any that work with my old Mac, and the
resources that I've found about modding or programming the CZ series on the web have been slim.

So, I'm stuck with presets, that are honestly pretty lame. The last time I used it was for the mallet sequence on this track, which features Public Enemy.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I48PiAspt8

But that's pretty much it. I would love to become a CZ power user, but I don't know how. I'm all about different shades in my music, so adding PD seems to make sense.

I don't want to sell these items, since they're not really mine, and the CZ101 has the bum power supply, but my friend will never ask for them, so I'm stuck in full on babysitter mode.

I did use my CZ1000 last night to play my new Dave Smith Instruments MoPho, but that doesn't really count.

Anyway, all the best. That's my story.

Howdy,

Yep, still using a CZ-1 and 2 CZ-101s, plus 2 Csio midi thru boxes, I did the memory cartridge/auto power off switch mod to so that I can access 32 sounds on the cartridge instead of 16, (on the 101s). Got 3 cartridges for the 101s and 2 for the CZ-1. Best mod I know of for a 101. I also have stayed old school, collecting old synths (30 or so)and using 4 or 8 or 16 track reel to reel. Built LOTS of kits, did LOTS of mods, and put together a GIANT .com modular. Finally bought a Roland VS2480CD but never learned to use it. There it sits. Am expecting a new iMAC any minute. I can't believe it. I'm FINALLY going, "inside the box". Never thought I would. but my 1st muzik partner talked me into it. My space has been downsized and I can't set up all the old gear anymore. Kung fu girls club? Sounds fun.

Re: Who Still Uses A CZ?

2009-05-09 by DM

Oh yeah, I still use a CZ...though on the road now (where I can't haul a CZ) I admit I'm pleasantly surprised with the Phase Modulation capability of Thor in Reason 4.0, and find myself wishing the CZ-1 had some of the parameter control Thor has. It even has the simulated resonance waves and "ring" option, which are a lot of what I love about the CZ synths. Another plus is 3 possible active wave forms, instead of just the 2 with the CZ. Biggest drawback with Thor is only ADSR envelope control...no 8-stage envelopes.

Started with a CZ-1000 20 years ago (which died about 7 years ago), and now use a CZ-1, CZ-5000, and a VZ-10M. The CZ-1 is my main board of the three I use, and it finds it's way into more than half the stuff I sequence/record into Sonar. Were the VZ-10M easier to program, I'd probably use that more, but the CZ-1 is much quicker to program for sound ideas I have. I just really like the PM/PD and FM sound in a mix (have an FS1R as well)...and as mentioned by a few on here, prefer hardware to software (where time and space allow).

I have a Moog Voyager and an Alesis A6 (which, don't get me wrong, are AWESOME), but the CZ's get used almost as much as those two, if that says anything...

Cheers,
WadRad

Hi, another CZ-er here just chiming in to be sociable.

I have a CZ-1 I bought a long time ago from Andrew Schlesinger, who
wrote "An Insider's Guide to CZ Synthesis". He kindly threw in a copy
of the book, too.

My studio's a collection of 90's hardware--I've never even gone near
a softsynth. I use old G3 Macs running Opcode programs along with a
composing app and various editors built in Max. Galaxy Plus has a
full CZ editor/librarian module. I also have SoundDiver, but it's a
pain and I don't use it much.

Old-school setups sure take up a lot of space, but they don't go
obsolete! Any more than they already are, I mean. I'm so glad I got
into synths before they went "virtual".

Amanda,

Consider me the male version of you with far less floorspace! :)

If you guys haven't seen Amanda's setup. It's actually quite
beautiful and she keeps them all in great condition.

Amanda, I'm assuming you're running OS9 on your G3.
I'm doing a 9600 running 9 as well.

Have you ever had issues installing Galaxy
on your machine?

All my other OMS applications (SVP, really) work fine, and I use
a Studio 5.

As for Kung Fu Girls Club, Mark. It's the feature film that I wrote,
directed, produced, and scored. You can find more out about it
(and watch some clips, of course) at

http://kungfugirlsclub.com

Thanks to all CZers. I really dig the promise of these machines, if only I could figure it out!

>If you guys haven't seen Amanda's setup. It's actually quite

Thanks, Robbie! I get kind remarks about my studio when I'm looking.
I get massacred for my gear collection when people think I'm not
looking. Gotta love the internet.

>Amanda, I'm assuming you're running OS9 on your G3.
>I'm doing a 9600 running 9 as well.

Nope, never assume! I run OS 8.6 on my serial port computers. I do
have 9.2.2 in one Pismo powerbook that has a faster processor. My
main studio G3 with Galaxy and networked Studio 4 interfaces actually
has System 8.5 with elements of 8.6 I've substututed in one at a time
to be sure everything keeps working.

The reason for this is that the fonts in Galaxy went weird in my
other computers after 8.5, even with the same font set installed in
all. The other Opcode stuff as you know works fine through 9. So I
have made sure not to update beyond the OS that the apps are all
comfortable with. In general I feel that people taking the OS beyond
what the hardware was designed for, is the main reason people have
trouble with their computers.

>Have you ever had issues installing Galaxy
>on your machine?

I responded to your question on the Opcode list asking exactly what
your error message was and exactly when it occurs, but you didn't
answer.

I've never installed Galaxy above 8.6, so your OS version might be
your problem. My music machines have nearly all possible software
components stripped out that don't run the system or the music apps.

Folks, sorry for the off-topic interlude. Hopefully it's interesting
to see a different context in which people are using CZ synths.

Re: [CZsynth] Who Still Uses A CZ?

2009-05-11 by Simon Beck

I don't any more.

Mine is a long and sad tale with ups and downs... Back in 1985 I was a keen Casio player, having bought a CT-202 new from Casio UK four years earlier. My only other keyboard (apart from an occasional "borrowed" grand piano) was a Hohner Pianet T electric piano. When the CZ-101 appeared, I played it in music shops at every possible opportunity, learning its functions and capabilities. Finally I bought one, and it became the cornerstone of my sound for the next 10 years.

When I stopped using the CT-202 on a regular basis I reproduced my favourite sounds as CZ-101 patches (I was very good at imitative synthesis) before giving the older keyboard to a local museum. My Hohner Pianet got stolen in 1988, but fortunately I also had a CZ patch for that sound, and I replaced the Hohner with a MIDI-equipped Casio CPS-101 electronic piano. This also meant that I could now finally play the CZ-101 from a full-sized keyboard!

Sounds ideal, doesn't it? But one grey afternoon in 1997 I got out my CZ-101 after several months of non-use. No sound at all!!! All the LEDs flashed simultaneously but the LCD remained blank. I tried everything, even the reset button but to no avail. I hate to say it, but I eventually put it in its flightcase and sadly drove it down to the local dump...

Then in about 2002 a CZ-1 came up on Ebay and I bought it for £80. I programmed in all my favourite sounds - I had kept all my old patch sheets - and of course it had twice the polyphony, velocity and after-touch, plus a very odd chorus effect...

Guess what? Yes, in 2006 it got stolen from my car. I still have a Casio, a WK-3000. It's a lot less programmable than the CZs, but just as playable and musical in its own way. And I've even programmed a Hohner Pianet sound...

My 20 year old CZ works great! I love it because the preset patches I have found online work great. It is a fun casio to mess with and record audio with. I am a synth nut. Also, I think it would be awesome if Casio Was producing more intensive analog products. Cheaper for the market too now that the recession hit really badly. I love my CZ and my Casio CTK 691 keyboard/piano.
Analog + Digital = GREAT!
bye for now. Also does anyone here record audio for their studio with the CZ? I havnt written here in theh group in a while.

The last time I used it was for the mallet sequence on this track, which features Public Enemy.

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=0I48PiAspt8

My gear amanda consists of the following: Drums, synthesizers, amps, and an old samsung 15 channel mixer. I am working on buying a good firewire computer recording unit. Plus then i can work on my indie projects. I sing as well. does anyone here write vocal songs?

Thanks, Robbie! I get kind remarks about my studio when I'm looking.

I have my CZ1000 under my bed 2 feet from where I'm typing at the moment. I tried to revive it about 5 years ago, but couldn't get any sound except for a low whine. I thought I may not have the right power supply for it, and to be honest, I haven't futzed with it since. I also have a Yamama DX7 and play that more. I did program some real interesting sounds back in the day on the CZ though. Maybe if it were a MiniMoog I would feel more compelled to get er running again.

I'd have to search to find the source code. I remember having it on diskettes (remember those - and 5 1/4 one to make it even harder) lonng ago. The program does actually run in a Command Prompt window and will load patches from the database I distributed with the program (a bunch of patches from a lot of different sources). The problem is it was coded to use only an MPU-401 MIDI interface under DOS (in UART mode if anyone remembers what that means).

I did give the source code to a guy (so I must have found it ... and lost it again...lol) who later released this CZ editor:

Hello all,

I just bought an used CZ-1000 (for 60 euro) and i joined this group.

I am developping a Windows editor called UniSynth with modules for all kinds of hardware. Actually, version 1.0 of the editor supports the Korg DW/EX-8000 and the Yamaha DX21/27/100.

The TX81Z/DX11 is almost done and will be part of version 1.1
I am currently working on the Oberheim Matrix6/6R/1000 module.
The CZ is next on the list ! I expect it to be available in July.

I hope it will help anyone 'who still uses a CZ' ;)

UniSynth sounds cool. Any plans to add the Yamaha TX802 to that list?

I will do it someday with all the '6 FM op' range of product. There should be one module per generation: Dx7 / Tx7 ; Dx7 II / Tx802 / Tx816 ; Dx200.

Meanwhile i should finish the '4 FM op' range with the TQ5, YS100, YS200; then the V50 and the WT11. Maybe the FB01 wich has a totaly different midi implementation.

But since i need to have the hardware at hand to do it right (or at least one per generation), it might take some time... and money.
If i manage to sell enough registrations, i will be able to invest in some more used equipment. Lets cross fingers ;)

Hi,

I already own a VZ-10M. Very nice sounds !
But I also wished to have the Top of the first generation of PD synthesis : the CZ-1.
I just bought one for a good price and I drove 530 kms outward journey and return on last Sunday in order to pick it up...

I just bought my midi/usb adapter for my CZ-1 and can't wait to play with it :D

I have the UNYSIN 2.1 software for my mac... any other great programs i can use to play with my CZ-1 out there? I figured this is a good one for my patches for organizing, but what else is there?

Cheers

The thing with the CZ-1´s velocity sensivility is not just volume
control, but pitch and especially timbre control. That makes is it, by
far, the most usefull and versatile CZ of all. Imagine having realtime
control of the pitch of one of the oscillators when using ring or noise
modulation. Or doing analogue type sequences with different DCW levels
on each note... And volume control is useful sometimes.
My Jupiter-6 took another dimention when I installed the Europa upgrade

if you like the external control
you should see what those sound modules are capabile of
if the jup and cz has you gushing
try a roland d-110 or roland jv880
control by prophet2000

filter resonance all nprm and data control , plus live sys ex record/pg-10
while play for manipulation

i don't have full comperhension yet cause you said cz1 and i have only cz101
,, its easy to assume we have differences allready

total control!!!
only one trouble ,, i only have ten fingers and about
100 tracks of data to control

like simplistic music too ,
variation is good
