Need help with i1 Profiler

Need help with i1 Profiler

2011-08-26 by spsguru

Hi all

I am new to creating icc profiles

I just purchased i1 Pro Basic kit

The software it comes with is i1 Profiler that automatically creates targets

I cannot find a way to just get to the measuring device and take the spot measurements I think I need to for creation of ICC - or to load in the target the way the Roy's icc instructions dictate for the old software.

Any help on creating icc profiles with i1 Pro basic kit would be appreciated

thank you
Sean

I don't think iprofiler supports spot measurements. You need the old xrite
"measuretool". It comes as part of the discontinued profilemaker5 download,
and the features you need work without a dongle (i.e. free). You can get it
here ...
http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=757&Action=support&SoftwareID=931

I think you can choose what to install - so just install measuretool.

Good luck.

Use ColorPort (download for free on X-Rite website). Create read a target with it.

I already posted about its use for creating icc profiles with qtr icc-create;

Mike

Thank you for the tip.

I did install measure. After multiple tries I keep getting the out of order error using the 21x4 patch

When I look at the sampled strip just prior to export it looks like the printed strip so I think I am measuring then right patch

But like I said after about 6 tries I keep getting the error

Any ideas how to get past this?

Thank you
Sean

A bit OT, but I moved to DataColor and it's a really easy spectro to use
with QTR. See http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Spectro.pdf

Seanh,

ok so just to confirm - you are printing the 21 x 4 random target from the
QTR eye-one folder - correct?
Without changing its size or anything else - correct?

then you load the 24 x 4 random txt file into measure tool and select "mode:
strip without gaps".
Then starting at the top left of the target where it says "Beg" you scan the
target smoothly from left to right for one line and the come back to the
beginning of the next line and scan from left to right again etc.

Note you must start the scan on the white paper before the target line and
end on the white paper after the target line.

Mike - this is just the kind of insight I was hoping for...can never seem to find this stuff in a manual.

No - I was scanning using Patches not strip

So - Strip without Gaps - start on white end on white - for each line - correct?

thank you
Sean

yep you got it - it will tell you if it reads the line correct.
if not try starting with a bit more white and ending with a bit more white.

you need to press the button on the i1 device to start each line.

good luck

Sean, indeed it appears that strip measurements requires the dongle. Sorry
about that.

I guess you'll need to use colorport

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

2011-08-28 by John Labovitz

I've done strip measurements many times without a dongle. (This is on a Mac, running various versions of OS X as late as Snow Leopard, and using an older i1 Pro.)

However, I've also had the grayed-out problem. I believe MeasureTool is picky about when you plug in the i1. You have to make sure it's connected *before* you launch MeasureTool. If you still have problems, try restarting the computer and trying again.

Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

Works for me without the dongle (win7 64bit). But the order of actions is bizarre. Here are my notes on how to do it:

• Open MeasureTool
• Select "Configuring"
• Specify "reflection" (for measuring paper) and leave Spectral toggles unchecked (this exports as LAB values)
• Specify your measurement device.
• Close the Configuring window
• Select "Measuring"
• Select the chart you printed
• Follow the instructions to measure the chart
• Getting the speed of strip mode right is a bit finicky, but still better than patch mode.

Hope something in there solves your problem,

  - susan

Sean,

I've used it a lot so I went back and looked at the sequence.
When you are on the page that says "Mode: Patch" you pull that down to
select "Strip without gaps". The second pull down that said Manual goes away.
The Start button also goes gray because you use the button on the device
to start the scan. Place the device on the white spot under "Beg" on
the paper.
Push the button and wait for a low beep sound (about a second) then drag
the device steadily across the patches to the white at other end. Stop and
then let up button on device. If you hear 3 beeps thats an error you can try
again. Otherwise, "Close" and "Save As" on next dialog.

Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

Hey everybody

Thanks for so many helpful responses - great group here.

It was a typical noob kind thing to do - I was not aware the device had a button on the side since I had been using the Start button - who reads manuals:) (maybe I should)

Anyway - great success. I scanned the strips - generated ICC - and wow - the display is an exact match for what I see on paper. This is really cool

thanks again to everyone for the help

Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

Can one print teh 21 random step wedge larger, say 8"X5" rather than 8"X1.5", to make it easier to scan. I get an error message every time I try to scan the small wedge with the Strip Without Gaps Mode, though I can measure each of the steps in Patch mode.

Re: [QuadtoneRIP] Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

2011-09-07 by Roy Harrington

You should be able to make the wedge larger, but I wonder if that's
what the issue is.
Assuming you are using the i1 with the supplied ruler, the wedge is
probably on the minimum
that should work but its not particularly hard to align it.

The main issue with the "scan without gaps" is that there has be
enough of a density
change that the device recognizes the change. (There is no timing check).
The random pattern should give enough contrast in most situations but
if its all too dark or
too light it can fail.

Re: Need help with i1 Profiler

2011-09-07 by SandyK

I think you answered my question.

First, there was no ruler in the kit I bought so I have tried to improvise a work around with a guide. Does X-Rite still sell parts for this device?

But the major problem could be in the second issue, i.e. lack of density change between the steps. I was trying to test the device with a random step wedge printed with a profile that does not produce a lot of contrast so the density difference between the steps is not great. But, I do not have any problem measuring with Mode = Patch.

It's well worthwhile to get the profile "better behaved" i.e. closer
to linear before
doing the linearization.
