Beginner questions

2008-01-23 by frankbickelmeyer

Hello,

my name is frank coming from germany and i am new in this group. I am
interested strongly in B&W fineart printing and startet a few weeks ago
with a cheap epson 1200 with TritonPlus ink (Black and 5 different
grays) and Calumets Museum Satin Matte. The results are very good,
though i am thinking i could be even better? I also tried out Clayton
Jones BO method, but the prints have very strong contrast with no
details in black areas. Is there any workaround related to this (beyond
the fantastic articles from clayton jones of course)? Can i use any
black ink (like the original epson ink for the 1200) or do i need a
special ink. In this case which of them will i get here in germany?
Another question is whether the epson 2100 would be a good advantage
compared to my 1200? I know the 2400 or even the 3800 are state of the
art but i am not able to buy such expensive machines.
Thank you for reading my questions!

Frank

Hello Frank,

Welcome to the forum.

>I also tried out Clayton Jones BO method, but the prints have very
>strong contrast with no details in black areas. Is there any
>workaround related to this...

If you see dark zone details on screen you should be able to get them
on paper, whether using BO or any other printing method. If you're
not it could be caused by various things. With the BO technique the
trick is to choose an image profile that gets a good screen to print
match, so what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG). This profile can
vary depending on your monitor/video card, etc. My suggestion of using
DG20 is just a starting point because it's in the middle of the range.

The proof paper you use to set this up is also important because
papers have different contrast curves. I always recommend using EEM
because it's inexpensive, has good dmax, and has a contrast/density
range that's right in the middle of where many of the best papers are.
Once you have this properly set up you'll adjust your image to look
good on screen and you'll get very close to that on paper, depending
on which paper you use. Final prints on other papers sometimes need a
paper curve layer with some slight tweaking to match the proof print.
In article #4 there is a detailed discussion for all this.

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton you are my man ;-) it´s fantastic, with the settings you
recommend in your article #4 i get wonderful black only prints just
with a cheap black ink (armor ink for just 6 €) on Brilliant Museum
Satin Matte paper. I am very happy now with the results and
astonishing the multigray prints with TritonPlus ink are not better
then the BO!
But is it a good idea to use the cheap ink for my BO prints while
attempting longliving pictures? I want to store them in the dark so
is it ok to use a cheap dye ink or what can i do alternatively with
my Epson 1200? You wrote about the Eboni ink. Which carbon inks are
available for this printer?
Thank you so much for the help!

Re: Beginner questions

Cheap ink is a gamble. I think good images deserves the best
"treatment". Yes, dye ink fade faster and may look greenish or have a
color cast in different type of light. Good images should not be
hidden away due to fading, but hang on a wall.

I don't know the MIS inks so I can't say anything about them. I use
Piezography inks from www.inkjetmall.com in my Epson 1290. That
printer is originally made for dye inks, but I have used pigment inks
in it for 2-3 years without too much trouble. Some 1290s give more
trouble than others (clogging). I don't know how Epson 1200 compare
to 1290 in this respect. The newest Piezography pigment ink is much
less prone to clogging than the inks I am using right now. It is
called Piezography MPS Selenium K7 which work on both matte and
glossy paper. (I have not tried them yet.) You could buy the black
ink (Shade 1) in bottles and fill it in a refillable cart.

Hello Frank,

Great. Glad it's working for you.

I agree with FinnK. Buying the bulk inks is so inexpensive there's no
reason not to use a good pigment ink. The Piezo matte black or Eboni
from MIS will both do great. I think in a 1200 you can use just about
anything - someone else maybe will step in here with more on that...

Clayton

Frank, I'd recommend your using Eboni and trying your BO prints. Once
you have that working you could go on to Paul's 3MK and/or the Eboni
hex or quad set he's come up with. You don't have to change anything
but the one ink to start. You would want to remove all of the other
inks and substitute cleaning solution for them./// DO be sure, repeat
sure to fully flush your machine with a cleaning solution before
running any of the recent inks like Eboni in it. That includes
cleaning the cap station thoroughly as well. The dyes are incompatible
with Eboni.///

Clayton is right. The 1200 will run nearly anything if treated properly.

Duane

Thank you for your advice!
But can anybody tell me where to order the Eboni Ink? I live in
germany so it would be fine if anybody can tell me if here is a
locakldealer for the "right stuff". Is it in cartriges or in Bottles?
If in Bottles, do i nee an empty original epson cartrige?
Thank you again and regards,

Re: Beginner questions

Take a look at www.inksupply.com for "MIS" inks (Eboni) and
www.inkjetmall.com for Piezography K7. If you plan to print BO only
the Piezography K7 MPS selenium black might have an advantage because
it goes on both matte and glossy papers. This is not possible with
Eboni as far as I know - check it.

It might be a little difficult to get empty carts made for refilling
from USA (Inksupply) because of some legal issues Epson is running.
Somebody else have to help find other sources for empty refillable
carts.

Re: Beginner questions

As i´ve found out in the meantime i can order Ultratone MatteBlack-
ink in bottles from a local dealer here in germany. Is that the same
as MIS Eboni?
But the problem indeed is that i cant find empty cartridges for my
Epson 1200.
When anybody could help i really would appreciate this.

Not exactly, that news would have made headlines.
The set uses a gloss optimizer. QTR "profies" utilizing the GO are in the works and not yet
available to my knowledge. Rolling your own for black only plus GO would be required.
Doable, but you'd be on your own with that unusual task.

Frank,

When I got my 1270, I ran the black 'til it ran out, and then, filled the cart with MIS black.

in germany in bottles) the same ink as the MIS Eboni?

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Beginner questions

Yes!!

It would be nice to have a clean cart, but I didn't blink an eyelash.

Since the process involves switching from dye ink to pigment ink, you have to make sure the old substance is not allowed to interact with the new ink.

As soon as my dye ink printed very light, I filled it with pigment and printed huge amounts of black to make sure it was flowing freely. I also freely saturated the cart. well nipple with vinegar and/or window ammonia.

Do you have the refill stuff from a old refill kit?

I have not seen MPS ink on any paper yet, and I am curious: is every
shade of MPS ink in need of a different amount of GO to make an
uniform look?

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Beginner questions

2008-02-05 by Gary Weaver

Ya!!

I would think that the place that has bulk ink would have a syringe.

I place the cart on a surface designed to absorb spills.

I poke a hole through the epson film on top.

load syringe and slowly transfer ink to cart.

I use the tap/rap method to settle ink and disloge air bubbles. I rap the ink exit flat against the work surface. I look for little "kiss" imprints on the work surface to show that ink is flowing.

[Digital BW] Re: Beginner questions

2008-02-05 by frankbickelmeyer

Gary,
thank you again!
Then i will try out this method to refill. How big should the hole be
on top of the cart? just as big enough for the needle of the syringe
i guess? Should i seal the hole then with a tape? And can anybody
please answer my question if the MIS Ultratone MatteBlack (which i
can buy here in germany in bottles) is the same as the MIS Eboni?

Frank

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Beginner questions

2008-02-05 by Gary Weaver

Frank,

I don't know about the MIS ink. I would write down part numbers from the MIS site. Go by the part numbers. You need to know this anyway. You will want numbers for the Eboni and UT matt so you can be sure which is which. I'm still using the old quadtone black and it's dated but not bad. When I finish that off, I'll be going BO eboni for the 1270.

You can examine the top of the black cart and see the indent for the fill hole under the "decal". With the 640, I covered the fill hole. With the 1270, I leave it not air tight.

You will want numbers for the Eboni and UT matt so you can be sure

Hi Gary. When you do finish with the old MIS quad black and go to
Eboni it will be a mistake if you just print the cart down and push
Eboni into it. The old quad blacks have some dye in them. Eboni will
gel in the presence of dyes. That will happen in the heads as well as
in the cart.

   -----------Isss baaad juju ;)-------------

You need to clear the old inks out first including remnants left in
the heads and on the cap station. Hence the recommendation of cleaning
cart first. I believe that, at this point in time, MIS is no longer
selling the old types of ink so there will soon be no choice but to do
this if you want to preserve your printer. (Note: I have two 1200s and
know whereof I speak :) )

Duane

Thanks for the advice, Duane!

I don't know what to do about replacing the Quadtone in the 3000 yet. To get my feet BO wet, I just used the black from the quad in the 1270 because I'm CHEAP!!!

I suppose I'll have to mix the quad black myself because MIS is too damn lazy and has abandoned it's hallmark inks.

It's not all that difficult to mix your own if you have enough black
ink. Take a look at Paul's site for info. His 4:3 H2O/glycerin base
mix works very well in the older machines like the 1200 and your 3000
as well. I also have a 3000 and I used a self mixed version of his VM
quads for quite a while in both my 1200 and the 3000. There were no
particular problems with it. I then went to the UT quads and that is
where I learned of the Eboni problem. Although I cleaned the heads and
the carts thoroughly, I didn't get the cap station on the 3000 clean
enough and it would gunk up constantly. I finally did a good job on it
and no problems since.

You can rinse out your old 3000 carts with a 10:1 mix of distilled
water and clear household ammonia. Just flush them with 20 or 30 ml
several times and leave them lay on their side overnight with some in.
Then do a final flush with distilled H2O.

Duane

Hi Duane,

Great insight. My "working" 3000 came from a eBay seller with blocked damper and a shot head(the 1270 didn't work either) .

I just want original quadtone on the 3000 - I could care less about innovation . Where do I find ESC-Q-100%-4-K?

The 1270 will eventually get Eboni for BO, if they don't phase that out.

I've been cutting stiff posterboard (22x28", 10sheets for $4) and running it though QTR on the transparency/film setting. I'm quite happy with it. So, I don't want to change this match-up : ) Who needs HPR??

[Digital BW] Re: Beginner questions

2008-02-07 by frankbickelmeyer

In the meantime i ordered the MIS Eboni in Bottles and a syringe. The
dealer told me that his ink is the matte Ultratone which is the
Eboni. I have an empty black cart here. I´ve found out that there is
no need to screw a hole into it, because i can put the needle into
the opening (vents) on the upside of the cart. But there are 2
openings on the upside, does anybody know which one i should use? Is
the black cart of the Epson 1200 1-chamber or 2-chamber? At the MIS
Homepage is a completely different approach: filling the card from
the bottom (into the opening where the ink comes out).
Somewhere else its recommended not to fill the ink with pressure, but
to let the cart dig the ink through the syringe by itself, what could
take several minutes...
I think i am confused.

It is confusing, but you just have to think each step through.

I've only done top fill and it's a slow process - maybe a minute.

If there is a problem with Eboni interacting with epson dye, it should be covered on the MIS site.
