I ve been able to get some really, *really* nice heavy percussive noises from (naturally) the FM synths, aside from the beatbox pcm samples.

As with pretty much any synthesizing instrument, you can make a variety of percussive noises with any of the synthesizers. You can use extreme pitch envelopes
