Hi All:

This is an advisory to not order any products from this company.
I ordered a portfolio case from them on October 19, 2010, have not received
either the case or a refund from them, even after ten or so phone
conversations with their customer service staff. They have given me a song and
dance for 3 months, but have not refunded me $67.20 for the cancelled order.

Richard,
I know you mean well with your post but I don't think it's appropriate.. I have no clue what's wrong but a week ago I re-ordered my supplies on 4 sizes of Renaissance Tissue and also a roll and I got it today.. I've been dealing with these guys for a long time and have never had an issue.. Something is broken.. I never get billed until they ship.. I think you need to dig deeper ...Some how their may be a miss understanding or a mistake of somekind.. This is cross posted to three groups.. I got that your upset but I honestly suggest something needs to be looked in to further.

Hello All,
I don't post very often, but the frustration expressed by two people about Light Impressions
reminds me, in general, about purchases on line. If you pay by credit card, and have not received,
the merchandise, or it's damaged & the company does not respond, your credit card company will. Even
if you've paid the bill already, they will take up the fight, and give you a credit on your account.

Companies are not happy when they have problems with the credit card issuers, and will respond and resolve
with them much more quickly.

Hope this helps.

I know, i am more frustrated to the down fall of a once very good company that had my business for many years (and a lot of it). A company I recommend to 100's of students.

the money end will get resolve with effort. But they will never win back my business and many others. They are getting slammed on so many sites it is very sad.

[Digital BW] Re: Light Impressions - Alternatives?

2011-01-29 by Paul

First I definitely concur in the recommendation to take advantage of the credit card firm's dispute resolution systems. They have the leverage and are required by law to have these systems, but you must act within their -- the law's -- time limits (60 days I believe). Read the fine print on the backs of the credit card bills carefully. At one time the notice of the dispute had to be in writing. My experience has been that at least with American Express a mere phone call is enough. (My old employer, the FTC, enforced the law against the credit card companies.)

Second, the real problem for me as a long time customer of Light Impressions is to find a replacement if they have, in fact, hit the wall. In particular, I like to have them cut 8-ply board. I have not found a good substitute (aside from my very high priced local framer). Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Paul

That is my real problem, replacement materials. It took me days to find some interleaving that I liked.

Try here for 8ply board, I too loved LI 8 ply board

I haven"t had a need to purchase matt board from this group, but I did have a question about some framing for canvas prints and not only did they responsed quickly they sent me some samples . They are also getting great reviews on apug.org

This company has 8-ply mat board from Crescent.

http://www.framing4yourself.com/shop/products/8-ply-museum-rag-mat-board/

I have gotten the 4-ply in full sheets and cut my own mats. I've never
used the 8-ply, but I've been happy with their 4-ply.

Re: [Digital BW] Re: Light Impressions - Alternatives?

2011-01-29 by Andrew Darlow

Hi Paul:

I've ordered hundreds of custom cut and pre-cut 8ply boards from framedestination.com. First, I should disclose that I helped
develop a product with them called the GalleryPouch, and I receive a commission on the sale of that product. I don't receive commission on any of their other products.

Their 8-ply board are very thick (all 8ply boards are not created equal), they are cut well, and they have recently increased the colors of 8ply boards that they carry. In quantities over 10 pricing goes down quite a bit.

They also protect their mats (and other products) extremely well when they ship them. Their customer service is also excellent.

Their website is http://www.framedestination.com.

Hope that helps.

All the best,

Andrew

They have some sister companies, the oldest/largest being Twentieth Century Photo Products and Business Solution. Both have been out of stock on most of the items in their catalogs for more than a year. It seems that they may be slowly liquidating inventory than going out of business.

Hi Jimbo:

I'm not trying to be vindictive here.... just think it IS my responsibility
to speak up about a problem in the marketplace that members of these lists
are involved in. I have gotten letters in the past from bankruptcy courts,
notifying me that I will not be getting my money back from companies I
have placed orders with. It is not a nice feeling. Light Impressions is
following the same behavior pattern as those companies that have gone belly-up on
me in the past. $67.50 is not a lot of money and I'm not angry with these
people, just very wary. They NEVER contacted me during the course of this
whole transaction, even after having their customer service people give me
assurances that my refund will be done in 1 week.... 2 weeks.& so forth.
I am of the opinion that you have been lucky. My post is merely a hint to

Rich,
I probably need to eat a bit of crow on this one. I will say that I have had no issues what so ever.. but after reading the rest of the posts something is clearly broken.. It to bad and a bit sad as they have been a specialty provider for a long time.. It appears their ability to communicate straight has really slid.. to bad.. and not acceptable..

Sadly, I gave up on Light Impressions a few years ago, having been a loyal customer for many many years. I had one bad experience after another, and saw no signs that things were likely to improve.

If any of you are looking for an alternative, I would suggest looking into University Products at http://www.universityproducts.com/

The founder and owner of Archival Methods is Dennis Inch. Dennis was also President of Light Impressions in the "good ole days" when nobody complained about LI service.

Another great resource is:

http://www.hollingermetaledge.com/

Larry Gates is the President and owner. Larry and I go way back to my time at the Smithsonian Institution in the 1990s. While working at the SI, I had designed a low cost packaging method for photographers and conservators to safely freeze small collections of processed photographic films and prints. Larry's company was the only conservation supply company eager to take it on as a product (you can still find it listed on the Hollinger Metal Edge website as the Safecare Freezer Storage kit). Freezer storage reduces image deterioration of processed film and traditional color prints by orders of magnitude, allowing these materials to remain in excellent conditions century after century (as long as you can find some heirs willing to keep the freezer running ;-)

cheers,
Mark

Re:Light Impressions

i have used light impressions for the last 20 years and never had a problem until the last 2-3 years. like you, i've had many fulfillment delays that have taken months to resolve. in one conversation with a rep, i was told that they had switch suppliers and are sourcing some of their products from mexico. i finally gave up on them and am now doing most of my purchases from http://www.documounts.com/. much happier now and prices seems more reasonable than light impressions. you are right to share this issue with others. if light impressions can't get their act together, i see no reason why others need to suffer through the agony you and i have experienced.

Re: Light Impressions - Alternatives?

Good list Keith. I can speak for two of these places. Talas was located for years about 2 blocks from my
studio in Manhattan, moved to another nearby location, and finally - to Brooklyn, several years ago where I haven't visited
the store, but still order from them. They are very knowledgable and often have items I can't find elsewhere. I also have
very high regard for their business ethics.

Gaylord is also very good, although my purchases from them so far have mostly been for archival negative
envelopes and related items. They ship quickly -- you can choose the carrier, and my recollection is that
the billing does not occur until the same day the package is shipped .

I've also purchased from University Products in the past. Don't remember what I ordered, but would
remember if there were problems with the company, and there were not.

So I googled Light Impressions and found this interesting item : If the owner's name is Steve McGrew, from the California based company - Light Impressions,
the answer to all the problems people are having with them is here:

http://www.holonet.khm.de/visual_alchemy/wavefront/wave18.html

It seems they are deeply involved in litigation over patents on a Holographic process, to the point that Light Impressions is about to be, or perhaps already
is in bankruptcy court. Now I don't want to start rumors - this could be a coincidence of the same names with two different companies. However, if
they're the same, one would guess there is little time or energy to pay much attention to the archival materials part of the company.

Take a look at Booksmart Studio in Rochester. Some of the old time Light Impressions folks updated for the 21st century. They still carry archival supplies in addition to latest in inkjet papers, inks, etc etc. Great customer service - makes you think LI is still in business in Rochester.

I have never used Booksmart Studio, but at least for paper their prices are quite high.

I just ordered Innova Smooth Cotton Duo (11" x 17", 25shts) for a book I am making. From Adorama the cost is 59.95 with free shipping. From Booksmart Studio the cost is 80.08.

2011-02-01 by Paul

I had ordered some 3-ring binders from Light Impressions and several months and phone calls went by before I finally called and asked to cancel my order. They were very nice on the phone and sounded embarrassed that they couldn't complete my order (the rest of the order had come through fine). So I searched the Internet and ran across Archival Methods. They had the same notebook in stock - I ordered it and it came right away.

I am not badmouthing Light Impressions, I had been using them for years. Clearly something was amiss in their operation, and I was sorry to see this happen. I hate to see this happen to any company.

I checked BookSmart and was pleased to find items there I used to order from Light Impressions (before I encountered last year the same problems with LI that many others have experienced), and for roughly the same prices. However, I found BookSmart's shipping costs FAR higher than even those I'd encountered from LI, so I never proceeded with my order.

I have been dealing with Booksmart for about eight years and have had excellent experiences dealing with this company. I've bought printers, ink and paper from them with equally good results. I like that you can always talk to a "real" person and that they know you as a customer and talk to you as if you're face-to-face in their storefront. If anything goes wrong they bend over backwards to make it right. And... they have free ground FedEx shipping for all orders over $100.

They're located in Rochester, NY, and have a very knowledgable staff. They seem very dedicated to making the fine art printing experience a good one for all.

Re:Light Impressions

2011-02-09 by zz_ir

As others have stated, I have also been a customer of Light Impressions for at least 20 years and have had problems getting products from them. I love the look of my B&W prints mounted in their Westminster 4 ply mat board, but the last two times I have tried to order some, it has been on back order and a phone call to them stated that they had no idea when it would be in.

Now, I've order a couple of 11x14 archival boxes, thinking they were in stock (no statement in their online catalog or at check out to the contrary), but I discovered, AFTER they charged my credit card and only by calling them, that they were backordered. They said they should be in "sometime in mid to late February" so I am still waiting.

I believe this may be my last order with them. There are lots of other places online that don't have these issues. It's too bad too, because I really do like their products. Their customer service has just deteriorated too much for me.

Keith,
You should probably do yourself a favor and contact your CC company and simply cancel the order. I too have been dealing with them for a long time ....fortunately my orders have arrived..... so it appears that I was lucky.. On this thread I've read to many horror stories so I have elected to switch vendors.
Constructively...there is sort of an unwritten law.. if it's a special order item the vendor chachinks the card when they order the item...... if not the card gets dinged when the item ships.. They are out of line. You are not supposed to be their bank. In the end the whole thing is sad as they are clearly having business issues ...the bad part is that they have chosen to have their customer base be a part of it rather then bucking up and owning it..

When my order didn't arrive after several weeks, the L. I. charge was on
my credit card bill. When I phoned LI, the woman said they didn't have the
mattes I ordered, but I was charged anyway, because "that's the way they do
it."
No other vendor seems to have pre-cut 8 ply mats 22x28" for a 16x20 print.

In visiting many photography exhibitions, I'm seeing a trend toward
unmatted framed photographs. I wonder if this is an esthetic choice or has the
cost of mattes made mounting an exhibition too costly?

I placed an order from light impressions several weeks ago and never received it. When I called they told me the company is "under restructuring" and apologized for the delay. I was able to cancel the order. I am not sure if they are still accepting orders on line, but prudence is warranted.

I stopped using Light Impressions them a while ago...a shame that a great operation has been run into the ground.

I have been ordering from archivalmethods (www.archivalmethods.com) created by the original founder of Light Impressions and based in upstate New York.

I just had an order last week.placed on Sunday and received on Tuesday...works for me.
