More likely a bad drive, faulty cable or connection, or bad disk, IMHO . First try remaking the connections at the floppy drive and the power connectors.

Seeing fuses mentioned.......is it possible that on my VFX-SD a blown fuse could incapacitate the disk drive to leave the message DISK DRIVE NOT READY?

Try checking the fuses. There are 5 fuses the top two sometimes blow, if you have a bad connection on a ribbon cable. check those too. fuses one and two (

You need the sequencer OS disk to load the OS into the SD1. This should have come with the synth. Do you have this?
